4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 31,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Fad Co D> PORT PERRY STAR MMUNITY Rotary donates to hall From page 1 infrastructure program, with one-third funding from the township. But this funding will be provided only with the help of the community, its mayor said. Council is experiencing a $267,000 shortfall as a result of costs needed to provide a park- ing lot as well and they are call- ing on the community to take an active role in financing the building construction. A meet- ing with the user groups was held recently to stress the need for such funding. The township is under the gun to get the financing in line as quickly as possible as con- struction must begin this year. Mayor Hall estimates plans could be finalized by August, with construction beginning soon after. "If the user groups are very positive about this thing, which I believe they will be, I would hope by September that we could definitely be building," he said. Scugog Shores Museum appoints a new curator By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star When it comes to Scugog, Dan Roberts history. The 26-year-old University of Western Ontario anthropology graduate was appointed to the position of curator at Scugog Shores Museum Village last week. "I'm very excited about the challenge," he said. "This areais very rich in history." "I am very impressed with the museum. There are many small museums around the province that don't have a set up as nice as this. Although Mr. Robert is more familiar with archaeological digs and pre-history than he is with documents, the first un- dertaking for him will be to cata- log the backlog of artifacts which have accumulated at the museum. The self-confessed history buff is looking forward to the challenge of working with the museum staff and the commu- nity. He will also be striving to build up the volunteer program at the museum and increase the public's awareness of the activi- ties offered at the facility. "A small museum has a re- sponsibility to the community and to create pride in the com- munity," he said. Despite his background in ar- chaeology and anthropology, and his experience at the Mu- seum of Indian Archaeology in London, Ontario, Mr. Robert more than fits the bill when it comes to getting the job done at the museum. "I'm going to bring a different perspective to history." The appointment of Mr. Rob- ert last week put to end a search for a new curator after its previ- ous one was forced to resign due toill health. Lake Scugog Historical Socie- ty President Paul Arculus said the response has been over- whelming and wide spread for a few job openings at the mu- seum. According to Mr. Arculus, 43 applications had been re- ceived for the position'of curator at the museum on Scugog Is- land. These applications have come from as far away as Otta- wa, Nova Scotia and Guelph. "We had some really high cali bre people," Mr. Arculus said. An impressive amount of ap- plications have been received for part-time positions at the village as well, with 38 appli- cants vying forthe positions. Mr. Arculus also noted that 40 applications had been re- ceived for the four summer posi- tions available at the museum, offered through a number of government-funded programs. When all the hiring is com- # { i Dan Robert, a graduate in Anthropology at the University of pleted in the next few weeks, Mr. Arculus said he hoped to have a staff of 10 working onsite to offer the programs through- out the summer. a Western Ontario, was named the curator at Scugog Shores Mu- seum Village last week.
