"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Lack of funding forces Scugog Employment Services to close J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Almost a year to the day of the opening of Scugog Employment Service in Port Perry, the office has been forced to close. In a letter to council May 30, manager Vonne Haigh informed council there was, no further federal or provincial funds available to continue operation of the office. The news forced the fledgling employment ser- vice to close its doors last Friday. While visibly upset with the closure, Ms. Haigh sat before council Monday afternoon and thanked Mayor Howard Hall for Driver is acquitted in crash A Little Britain man was ac- quitted last week in the death of a Brock Township woman. David Jenkins, 24, was found not guilty in the death of Angela Kennedy who was killed in a head-on crash on July 15, 1992 after a collision on Regional Road 2, north of Seagrave. Miss Kennedy was south- bound on Regional Road 2 when her pick-up was struck by Mr. Jenkins' vehicle after it crossed the centreline. Mr. Jenkins suffered head and facial injuries, a broken leg and arm. He was airlifted to To- ronto with life-threatening inju- ries. Investigators noted the road was dry and the visibility was good. There was no indication of drugor alcohol use, they said. Mr. Jenkins pleaded not guilty to the charge. R W MORRIS PHOTO PROD R Weddings ... Portraits ... Secure your memories hire a professional. Cottrell and Hardy for office space. Ms. Haigh said the project was a "mind blowing success" with a 31 per cent success rate adding it was a great loss to her personally. Mayor Howard Hall echoed her comments and said he had hoped funding would become available. "I guess it was not to be," Mayor Hall said. The Mayor said it was unfor- tunate the employment service had to close as he felt it served a useful purpose in the com- munity. "It's too bad the pro- vince did not see fit for further funding," he said. Scugog Employment Service was started on a shoe-string budget one year ago following the completion of the Needs Study for Employment and Immigration Canada. In a report to MPP Gord Mills on May 20, Ms. Haigh showed the office had 369 clients regis- tered of which 116 had returned to employment. Ms. Haigh reported that she had been without any income whatsoever since early February and it was with much regret that she was left with no choice but to abandon Scugog Employment Services. "It worries me greatly that a good many good people who have had such high hopes and faith in our efforts will feel they have been let down," she wrote to Mr. Mills. PETERHVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Dianne Foote, right, office adminstrator for the Ministry of Agriculture office on Water St. in Port Perry Is seen here with Cathy Salo, a student employment officer who will be available to help students find summer employment. Student summer jobs Students in Scugog Township looking for summer work can now check out job listings in Port Perry. The Canada Employment Centre for students, located at Agricultural Employment Ser- vices in Port Perry will give area youths a fair chance to fill the listed job vacancies. In the past the job listings for Scugog were posted in Oshawa, making it difficult for area stu- dents, who did not have the transportation to drive to Oshawa. "We felt it was giving the Oshawa students an unfair ad- vantage when they had the list- NEW MANAGER ings for both Oshawa and Port Perry jobs. We were concerned the students wanted to work but couldn't travel to Oshawa to find the work, and we didn't want that," said Carrie Fleury, supervisor of the program. Adding, "we want students in Port Perry to have a shot at these jobs." Cathy Salo began work this week as the new student em- ployment officer at the building and will be predominately help- ing Scugog Township students. The programis a new one and is being run as a pilot project to see how things work out and what changes if any must be made during the year. 7 AT BRUTON BIG V member to the Doug Brown and 4 pm. = 268 Queen Street Port Perry Ph. 985-8886 HOURS: Sunday tam to 4 pm oo i Keer Watpool, manager of Bruton Big V invites all of her CUSHTATS and friends to join her in oe. welcoming the newest Bruton Big V team. takes over as store manager at Bruton Big V and everyone Thursday, June Z betw BRUTON BIG V -- DRUG STORE -- Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm: Saturday 9am to 6pm; Doug. is invited to stop in for coffee & donuts at the store to get acquainted een 12 noon iL $$ @ ia
