Gamblers lose and tie in City League action The Greenbank Gamblers had their least productive week of the fastball season as they only managed to pick up a sin- gle point in two city league games. Greenbank played a double header in Oshawa on Monday night and the Oshawa Juve- niles pulled of a major upset as they downed the Gamblers by a 1-0 score in the opener of the twin bill. John Sharp was the winning pitcher for Oshawa and al- though Greenbank hit safely in every inning he did not allow a Gambler runner to cross home plate. On the other hand Jim Chil- vers on the Greenbank mound had not allowed an Oshawa hit going into the last inning when Oshawa turned a one out dou- ble by Graham Caise into a game winning run on a force play at home plate that was ate. Caise had the lone Oshawa hit while Bill Buys had a pair of Greenbank hits with others go- ing to Steve Durham, Chilvers, Brian Till and David Jones.- Sharp was tough when he had to be and fanned six Gam- blers during the game. Game Two saw Greenbank and the Flying Squirrels hook up and Oshawa Jumped into a 3-0 first inning lead, courtesy of a Gambler error, two base on balls and a hit by Dave Hoff- man. Oshawa scored again in the third but Greenbank start- ed coming back on a Peter Oosterholt home run and scored three in the fifth on hits by Dur- ham, Oosterholt, Greg Newell and Buys to tie the game. However in the sixth inning Dave Hoffman homered and Oshawa carried a 5-4 lead into the seventh inning. Then Steve Durham drew a walk, went to third on Pete Qosterholts third hit of the game and scored the tieing run on Greg Newell's sac- rifice fly. Jim Chilvers shut Oshawa down in the bottom of the seventh and the game end- ed in a tie. Greenbank out hit the Flying Squirrels by a 7-4 margin but the final score was a 5-5 stale- mate. Hoffman with two, McKenna and Baker had one hit apiece for Oshawa. Oosterholt led Green- bank with three hits with Ne- well, Don Beaton, Brian Till and Bill Buys having the oth- ers. Jim Chilvers had a great night on the Greenbank hill and allowed only five hits during the double header while claiming 27 strikeout victims. An excel- lent pitching performance that deserved better than the single point that the league leading Gamblers picked up. This Thursday the Gamblers host Oshawa Mickey Finns at Greenbank Park at 8:15 p.m. | Coaching staffs announced for Port Perry Minor Hockey In seven short weeks minor hockey will once again be un- derway. The rates for the 1994-95 season have not been set, but it is quite likely they will be in- creased. The Executive will be working hard over the next few weeks, during budget discus- sions to keep this increase to a minimum. With regard to fund raising the Board has decided to contin- ue our policy of charging a base rate for registration, and to add to that an additional "fund rais- ing" levy. In the past we have had tickets for a "sky box" and "Leaf for a Day". This year with an eye on economic conditions we will be offering a product that each family will be able to censume or sell to help keep the cost of hockey down. Due to the poor response at our skate and equipment ex- change last year we will not be operating one this year. As an alternative feel free to bring a list of your surplus equipment complete with prices, sizes and phone numbers. These can be osted on our Minor Hockey bill oard until the season gets un- derway, to help recycle used equipment. to a 9-5 in league action This report sponsored by Coun- try Style and Haugens. On Monday, July 11, the Port Perry Bantam Merchants trav- elled to Metropolitan Fennel's Corners (just north of Bradford) and played in a Field of Dreams' type atmosphere in a park sur- rounded by cornfields. Al- though the park resembled that of the movie's, the player's that called it home, did not. No Shoe- less Joe Jackson here. Port took advantage and won handily 14- Hits by Darryl Moase, Brad Morton, Doug Short, Jason Lo- gan, and Brad Shanley gave Port a 6-0 lead by the second in- ning. Port's offence continued to roll throughout the game build- ing on their lead and Matt Kay took advantage. Matt went the distance for the victory and Port went home happy. The following Wednesday Port played host to a much her- alded (not sure why) Peterbo- rough squad and easily contin- ued their winning ways. A combination of great hit- ting and superb pitching proved lethal as the Merchants pound- ed their foes 9-2. Doug Short provided the of- fence in the early going as he sent a shot to the gap that scored Jeff Clarke, and Port was smokin'. An onslaught of hits by Clarke, Short, Logan, Morton, Shanley, Kay, Moase, Best, Ver- sage, Kspie, and McQuaid (I could go on, but I'm. developing writer's cramp) smoothed the way for both pitchers, Kay and McQuaid to relax and pitch their game. Special defensive mention goes to Mike Phoenix, who made one outstanding catch af- ter another in right field, and should be expecting thank you cards in the mail from both Matt and Marshall shortly. This win raises Port's record to 9-6 in league play and 12-8 overall, including tournaments. Their next action is Wednesday, July 20 vs. Scarborough. i --
