North Durham Alternative Housing (NDAH) has submitted a proposal to the rovincial ministries of ousing and Health for a 60- unit apartment building that will include up to 15 or 20 units for adults with ongoing treatment needs, and now await word on a decision. "We have a housing sponsor and a health care provider," said John Gillham, chair of NDAH last week. "The next step is for each of them to write a proposal to the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Health." The March of Dimes has been selected as health services provider for the roject, while it is to be built b Durham Non-Profit ousing. Ministry of Health funding, however, 18 not so certain. "We have some d people now with the March of Dimes and Durham Non-Profit Housing who will be weaving our way through the bureaucracy," said Mr. Gillham. "Our big job was getting the survey out as a start for our working group." That survey, conducted soon after NDAH was formed in January of this year, was circulated to disabled people throughout north Durham, said Mr. Gillham. Of the 61 responses received, 65 per cent ople over 60 years of age; 70 per cent indicated they'd like to be considered for tenancy in the new project, while 65 per cent indicated a wish to live in Uxbridge. The project would provide housing for seniors and those over 50, a percentage of whom have disabilities that require long-term care. It would integrate the disabled with the able-bodied and serve as an alternative to hospitals or nursing homes, which aren't appropriate settings for those involved in the study. Survey results led to a for a 60-unit apartment building with at least 15 units designated for the disabled. Mr. Gillham said the project would provide needed housing for people in" North Durham without foreing . RA es aT elem .them to move far from 'their. homes. fh "The idea of supportive housing is to ave it community-oriented,"" said Mr.' Gillham, adding the proposal fits in with recently-issued Ministry of Health guidelines for Jong town care. NDAH is comprised of disabled people and their relatives, as well as some caregivers. At least three members of the board are Port Perry residents.
