They voted to defer decision on a new contract for pick-up in the municipality, opting to wait until a meeting Oct. 31 when they'll be supplied more information on the issue. At issue is a proposal to accept a bid for pick-up services by the company B.F.I. which submitted the lowest of six quotes in a call for tenders; companies were asked to submit prices for pick-up at the 5,000 homes currently serviced by the municipality, and a quote for extension of pick-up to all 7,000 homes in the township. B.F.1.'s bid for township-wide pick-up was $287,873. Twenty men and women have registered as candidates for councillor, regional councillor, mayor and school board trustee, as Scugog prepares for municipal elections Nov. 14. The deadline for nominations arrived and passed Friday afternoon (Oct. 14) with few surprises, as virtually all of the can- didates have announced their intentions in the weeks leading up to the deadline. The only element of suspense was Ward 3, where as of Friday no one had come forward with plans to challenge incumbent Ken Gadsden. The deadline elapsed with no one filing papers, meaning the three-year council veteran will be acclaimed. All council incumbents, with the exception of Area Councillor Harvey Graham, will be run- ning again. Councillor Graham's position has been eliminated with the creation of Ward 5 in the township. Township Fire Chief Don Steele said last week an order has been placed with the Superior company in Red Deer, Alta. for a truck to replace the vehicle that was pulled from the road late in the summer after it was found to have structural damage and was deemed unsafe. The development created something of a crisis for council- lors, who had to come up with a means of replacing the much-needed truck and staying within the budget they've set fox themselves as their current term in office comes to an end. Chief Steele said the municipality has the go-ahead to lease the $160,000 vehicle, an arrangement that allows the township to avoid issuing debentures to pay for the purchase. Also softening the blow is a substantial reserve the munic- ipality had set aside for retrofitting of existing fire vehicles. "We've got $80,000 in the budget already, so we're going to lease the rest of it over a three-year lease," said the chief last week. The township will buy a Ford truck with a 1,000-gallon water tank and a pumping unit to replace the vehicle that was taken off the road, said Chief Steele. "We're expecting it by the end of December or the first of January," he added.
