No one came forward to chal- lenge the Ward 3 councillor in this year's municipal election, giving him the only acclamation on the seven-position slate of councillors, regional councillor and mayor. Councillor Gadsden, who has represented the Scugog Island ward for three years, said Friday afternoon shortly after nominations for the 1994 municipal vote closed that he sees the acclamation as an endorsement of his first term on council. "It obviously means that there can't be too much opposi- tion to the representation I've been presenting for the last three years," he said when con- tacted just after 5 p.m. "In a way it's like kissing Studies done on bingo hall Preliminary studies indicate an adequate water supply and promising signs for sewage dis- posal at the Scugog Island site of a planned gaming hall, town- ship councillors were told Monday. They heard submissions by a consultant, an engineer and Mississaugas of Scugog Island band Chief Gary Edgar, who told them construction on the controversial bingo and Monte Carlo hall will begin soon. The Chief said stringent groundwater and soil tests are being carried out to ensure the property is suitable for the 50,000 square foot building, which will be the site of daily bingo games and fundraising Monte Carlo events during the weekends. "From a First Nation point of view, our standards are as high as they can possibly be," said Chief Edgar. Project consultant John Chalmers said hydro, water and traffic studies conducted so far have been encouraging. See this Friday's edition of The Weekend Star for more details. PROPANE FIREPLACES CECE RICH KEN GADSDEN your sister -- but I'll take it." Councillor Gadsden added that just because no one came forward to challenge him for the councillor's job doesn't mean he will be taking a casual approach to his post: "I intend to work as hard as ever to get the job done." First elected to council in the 1991 vote, Councillor Gadsden has taken an active role in municipal politics. He has been a member of a council that has taken the township through three years of severe economic downturn and man- aged to keep a tough line on municipal budgets, and was a member of the economic devel- opment committee that recently came out with a study and strategies on how to guide devel- opment in Scugog over the next several years. "I think the toughest thing for the township as a whole will be preparing for development, in a sense of good planning and controlling it," he said in looking ahead to the next term. He added he'd like to continue on as a member of the economic development committee, which recently published a wide-rang- ing survey of opinions on devel- opment and other issues, sup- plied by township residents. ..He said the council will have to encourage balanced develop- ment, bringing about an even assessment base of residential and commercial taxpayers -- currently home owners shoulder the lion's share of municipal expenses -- and wrangling with issues like the development of the new community recreation centre. He added that the past coun- cil -- whose last meeting was yesterday -- has worked effec- tively on a number of issues, with all members bringing valu- able viewpoints to the table and avoiding acrimonious debate. "I hope the next council can operate on the same basis," he said. Incumbent Howard Hall is being challenged by David Malcolm of Nestleton; his brother, Glenn Malcolm, also of Nestleton, has come for- ward to vie for the regional councillor's seat, currently held by Yvonne Christie. The most-contested seat in the township is Ward 1, where incumbent Ken Carruthers is facing a chal- lenge from Doug Moffatt and Barry Johnston. There will be two seats without an incumbent: Ward 5, which was created for this election and replaces the Area Councillor's position, and Ward 4, where incumbent David Dietlein has with- drawn from the race after learning recently he is expe- riencing a recurrence of Hodgkins' disease; he will undergo extensive and gru- elling treatment. He announced his intention to seek reelection in September. And the public school trustee's seat is being sought by three people in addition to Mrs. Drew: Doreen Kendall, Bob Brooks and Carol Switzer are on the ballot for next mon- clerk's office was Ward 1 incumbent Ken Carruthers, who filed just after 10 in the morning last Tuesday (Oct. 11); the last was Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, at 2:30 Friday afternoon, two and a half hours before nomi- nations closed. In the coming weeks can- didates will be pounding the pavement throughout the township in an attempt to meet and woo voters; many have already begun, and as of last week election signs were beginning to crop up in yards and along roadways in Scugog. As of this week, they can legally advertise in local . newspapers. Voters will have a chance to meet and listen to candi- dates for mayor, regional councillor and school board trustee at an all-candidates' meeting being convened Oct. 26 at the Port Perry High School; as of now there is no similar forum being held for council hopefuls. Wally Donaldson, who is running against Karen Puckrin for the newly-created Ward 5 seat, has said he is willing to organize an all- candidates' debate if it appears no one else will.
