This was the first match-up of these two teams this season. An action filled first period saw goalie, Mike MacLennan come up with three big saves in a row. Stouffville opened the scoring at 10:27. Braden Tarbotton walked in on the Clipper's net, but the Clipper's netminder came out on top. At 7:32, Stouffville doubled their score on a rebound off the post. In the second period, Chad Lance fired from blank range and once again, the Stouffville goalie came up big. At 11:40 Nick Pe- lyk took the rebound from a Jeff Ashton slapshot and made no mistake. This goal was also assisted by Brad Johnston. The Legionaires carried the play at the mid-point of the sec- ond but once again, the Clipper goalie was doing his job. At A 5:19, Port tied the game on a goal from Nick Pelyk amidst a scramble in front of the Stouftville netminder. Mike MacLen- nan came up with a big glove save to keep the score even at two, but at the 2:03 mark, Greg Bruton scored, unassisted on the "old wraparound." Going into the third, with the score 3-2, for Port, play was end to end with the goalies seeing lots of action. Brad Johnston's slapshot was foiled by the goalie. Nick Pelyk carried the puck the length of the ice, made a nice pass to Greg Bruton in the slot and scored on a one timer - stick- side. At 7:09 Stouffville came back to score on a two on two rush. At the midpoint of the third, Stouffville took a major penalty for hitting from behind. With two minutes remaining in the game, Port took a penalty but a good penalty killing effort kept the final score Port Perry 4 - Stouffville 3. Legionaires had four penalty minutes and the Clippers had seven. Good effort, boys! Techstar wins five straight On Oct. 23, the Techstars were up against the Oshawa Canadiens for an away game, at home. The Oshawa teams can- not get ice time in Oshawa so they have a home game each at the Port arena. The Oshawa team put up the biggest fight the Techstars have had since their league started, but the quick start of the Tech- stars was too much to come back from. The final score was 7-4 Techstars. Techstar goalscorers were Troy Campbell and Dave Gai- ney with two each, Dan Lyons, Ian Parliament and Ryan Puck- rin. On Oct. 26, the Techstars were looking to bring their record to 5 and 0 when Sutton came to town. The Sutton team was no match for the Techstars who walked away with a 13-3 victo- ry. On Oct. 29, the Techstars were off to Bewdley to face the very strong Peterborough team. Peterborough got off to a good start and had a 5-1 lead after one period. But the Techstars would not give up. They fought long and hard to come back, but came up short with a 6-3 loss, their first of the regular season. The Techstar goals were scored by Dan Lyons with two and Dillan Weber who was play- ing his first game with the Tech- stars. The Techstars' next home game is Wednesday, Nov. 2. Amaz- ing goaltending by Zak Fis and Shane Fischer and great defen- sive plays by Garrett Brown, Dylan Harper, Wes Langmaid, Mike Thompson, Mike Wise- man and David Halward served up one great game played by our boys. We hosted Oshawa Red- wings Thursday night and the scoring started early for us with a goal by Skerratt, assists by Geoff Simpson and Mike Wise- man. Oshawa came back to tie it up to end the first period. A sec- ond goal by Derek Bond, assists to Mike Milligan and David On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Port Perry Ca- nadian Tire Midget Islanders continued their pre-season action and fine-tuned their offen- sive skills with an 8-3 thrashing of Manvers. This contest was billed to be a close one, a real barn burner, an action packed defensive strug- gle, but that just didn't happen. Port came out of the gate on fire, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of play, cour- tesy of Grey Thompson, Matt Phillips and Eric Lucyk. This left the Manvers players dumb- founded and hungry for some respect. Unfortunately for the Islanders their foes got themselves right back into the game and at the 13:06 mark of the third period the game was squared at three. But no fear, Port's snip- ers were near. Lucyk scored again, while Carl Phoenix potted a pair and so did Devon Blair. Hey, that rhymes, sort of. Credited with assists in this game were Jon Jamieson - four, Kevin Gray - two, Jason Logan - two, Tim Fitzpatrick - two, Trevor Smith - two, Todd Parry - one, Lucyk - one and Phoenix -one. Also strong in this game was the dynamic duo of Brian Bickmore and Jamie Trick as they both played superb in net, stopping shot after shot. The following Sunday the Islanders were in Beaverton for a tilt with the Blades. Port played this game very similar to their last one. Things were close in the early going, but Port eventually pulled away for another 8-3 shel- lacking. Islanders defeat Manvers The line of Carl Phoenix, Matt Brown and Tim Fitzpatrick were hitting on all cylinders this night as each had a multi-point game. Brown got things rolling with help from Phoenix and not long after Brown returned the favor with Fitzpatrick chipping in. This trio would add a third goal in the second frame as Phoenix bulged the twine again, set up by his buddies. Also scoring were, Greg Thompson, Todd Par- ry, Jon Jamieson, Eric Lucyk and Trevor Smith. Also appearing on the scoresheet were Kevin Gray, Kent Taylor, Mark Brownson and Rob Gracie with assists. The game had to be called with 2:48 left in the third period due to the over zealousness of a few Beaverton players and some of their younger fans. Both Brian Bickmore and Jamie Trick were sharp when called upon between the pipes. The next night the Islanders began league play in Manvers. With pure talent Port tallied another eight goals and only allowed one to win their third straight. This one was not a contest from the beginning. Port built a 5-1 lead after two periods and then added three more in the third to add insult to in- jury. Marksmen were: Carl Phoenix with three, Greg "I Went Penalty Free" Thompson with two, Eric Lucyk, Matt Phillips and Kevin Gray. De- vin Blair, Mark Brownson, Tim Fitzpatrick, Lu- cyk, Gray and Phoenix each had assists. The coaches of this years team are Steve Thompson, Gary Smith, Mike Tripp and manag- er, Eric Donnelly. Port's next action is Wednes- day, Nov. 2 against Mariposa. Halward set the tone for a great end-to-end game. Next goal by Simpson seemed to clinch the game for us, giving us a great lead. Oshawa fought hard but came up one goal shy when Thompson, assists to Timmers and Wiseman, scored to make it a4-3 game. . On Saturday, Oct. 29, our boys travelled to Whitby for an exhibition game. Our coach, Paul Milligan, assistants Randy Wiseman and Steve Churchill, made a team line change which proved to be a good move. With 53 seconds left in the first, Wes Langmaid pulled the string for our first goal of the game, assist to Glen Thompson. There was no scor- ing in the second. Whitby came close to scoring a few times, but excellent goaltending by Fis kept the game from being tied. In the third period, the game got a little more aggressive but our boys showed some good sportsmanship and kept to the game plan. The boys broke up Whitby's game over and over at the neutral zone, which seemed to frustrate Whitby. Our defen- sive core of Bond, Robbins, Schembri, Skerratt, Simpson and Timmers, kept the play to the outside and cleared the puck quickly. Milligan showed some great puck handling and passing throughout the game, while Harper, Brown and Thompson rushing to the net looking for rebounds and caus- inghavocin front of the net real- ly helped the game plan. With just seconds left in the game, Whitby had a breakaway but was denied the goal by a sprawling save by Fischer which let us go home with a 2-1 victory. Our boys seem to be playing a great team effort and are starting to play excellent hockey as a team. Way to go, guys and coaching staff. Good luck and keep up the good work and excellent team spirit.
