ENN an a-------------------- "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 8, 1994 - 17 ee go The Port Perry MoJacks defeated Bo cal squad cruised to an easy 4- ~ MoJacks defeat Bobcaygeon From Page 15 Steve Staniland followed that up scoring a powerplay goal with just over two minutes left in the first period. Todd Dennis and Jeremy Ross earned assists on the goal. Keith Leslie, one of the Mo- Jacks best threats on the ice, came alive near the end of the second period. At 18:37 of the period, Leslie scored the nicest goal of the game, skating full speed at the Bobcaygeon net. A Bullet defenceman knocked Leslie's feet out from under him, but before falling to the ice, Leslie managed to wrist a shot high over Vandam that made it 3-0. The third period looked a lot like the second period. The Mo- Jacks defence continued to limit any chances for the Bullets to get into the game, and the Mo- Jack offence continued to fire shots at the Bobcaygeon net. Ross appeared to have scored a goal for the MoJacks at 12:48 of the third, but the referee called it back, ruling that the puck had been kicked in. It didn't slow down the MoJacks momentum though. One min- ute later, Leslie scored his sec- ond of the game to give the Mo- Jacks, what turned out to be their final goal of the game, to makeit 4-0. The goal was almost a repeat DAVID STELL/PORT PERRY STAR bcaygeon on Sunday night at Scugog Arena. The lo- 0 victory. See story for more details on the game. of Leslie's second period effort, but he didn't get knocked down this time. Again, Dennis and Titterton earned assists, when Leslie took a pass beside the net that he flipped high over Van- dam. Paterson took home the game puck for the shutout and his first win. He was in a good mood after the game of course. "I like winning," he said. "I'm not usually a shutout goalie, but the defence played great to- night." Steve Laird ran into some trouble in front of the opposi- tions goaltender for the second Sunday in a row. Last week he was involved in a fight after get- ting a piece of the goalie, but this week he avoided a fight. He doesn't want any of that to con- tinue though. "I've got to stay out of trou- ble," Laird said. "I've got to be a leader and play hard at both ends of theice." Upcoming games: The Modacks hit the road next weekend for games in Lit- tle Britain, Saturday night and Lakefield, Sunday night. They return to Port Perry Nov. 17 for a rare Thursday night game at 8:30 p.m. with the Little Britain Merchants challenging the MoJacks at Scugog Arena. Shane Country Style Bantams come up a little short On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Port Perry Country Style Bantams travelled to Trenton to face the Goldenhawks. We scored our first and only goal in the middle of the first, while on the power Norton walked out from the corner and gave the tender the old "how's she goin." Norty then proceeded to bury the puck upstairs. Nice move Shane! Norton's goal was unas- sisted. The power play unit is looking sweet. As I said before, that was our only goal. Trenton scored two in the second and an- other in the third to make it 3-1 in their favor at the final buzz- er. A number of players played well on defence, filling in for Mike Heasman and Colin Laird, who both were forced to stay in Port Perry with working commitments. The absence of Rob Murphy is slowly coming to an end. Murphy's return will really help the team out. his week's player profile is on veteran Rob Murphy. Murf has been playing both defence and forward this year, making him a very versatile player at both ends of the ice. Rob is a hard working, two-way player. Murphy makes his presence felt on the ice as a dominant physical force. Last year he led the team in penalty minutes. Murphy has great talent, and can come through with a key goal in any type of game. Rob wants lots of fans to come out to Scugog Arena, because quite simply put: "We need and want a lot of support from the greater Scugog area residents. We have a tough, talented team this year and we want tolet Port Perry know how they're being represented." Come on out on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. to watch some fast, exciting, fun, beloved hockey. The Country Style Bantams would also like to point out that we have been getting some good crowds, and that we really appreciate it. If you like hockey, and have some free time on your hands Monday nights, come on out and see some great entertainment with other members of your community. Canadian Tire Midgets looking for four straight lose match to Mariposa Last Wednesday, Nov. 2, the Midget Canadian Tire Island- ers hosted the Lightning from Mariposa. Port was looking for their fourth straight win, but things did not go as planned. A nine-day layoff was very evi- dent this night, as the Islanders looked out of sync, and lost 3-1. Things didn't look. too bad early on, when Matt Brown, af- ter getting the puck from Carl Phoenix and Tim Fitzpatrick, ripped a perfect shot into the twine through the goalie's five- hole to square things at one in the opening frame. However, from there on in, Port was out- hit and outhustled. Mariposa scored once in the second and added insurance in the third to secure the victory. The only bright spot in this game was the play of Brian Bickmore, who looked like a puck dispenser, spitting out rubber all night long. If not for his play, the score would have been much worse. Port took this licking and rolled into Woodville the follow- ing night, for a tilt with the ole' maroon and green. The Island- ers took out some of their frus- trations from their previous ef- fort and handed Woodville a 6-1 drubbing. The first period was scoreless and Port had to be wondering what had happened to their high-flying offence dis- played earlier in the year. But, not to worry. Port stepped it up a notch, and controlled the rest of the game. Kevin Gray got the party started early in the sec- ™- ond, ripping a perfect wrist shot by the opposing goalie. He was then followed by Kent Taylor and Mark Brownson, and after two frames, Port was well on their way to victory. Matt Phil- lips, Carl Phoenix and Greg Thompson rounded out the scoring with help from Eric Lu- cyk, Tim Fitzpatrick, Jason Lo- gan and Rob Gracie. Jamie Trick worked between the pipes, and at times looked like Felix Potvin, especially with his lightning quick glove hand and ability to spice up any routine saves. Hey, every game needs a little flare here and there, right? Both coaches, Gary Smith and Steve Thompson must have been pleased with the discipline = shown as Port players only spent eight minutes in the pen- alty box. ort's next action at home is fis Wednesday, Nov. 9, versus ps. x Wally Donaldson, left, a Scugog resident and editor of the Oshawa Times was on hand for the presentation of a photo of Eric Lindros, centre, and Bobby Orr, in Oshawa Generals uniforms. The print will be placed in the Civic Auditorium 9 PHOTO COURTESY OF OSHAWA TIMES when renovations to the building are complete. Also pic- tured is Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond. See story for more details. Scugog man has a hand in Lindros/Orr photo for the Civic A column by Scugog resident Wally Donaldson has resulted in a framed picture of Eric Lindros being erected in the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. The Oshawa Times sports editor wrote a column last month stating his concern that there was not one picture of Oshawa General graduate Eric Lindros, or other recent Generals in- volved in the 1989-90 Memorial Cup championship year, hangingin the auditorium. The parents of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyer read the article contacted Oshawa Mayor Nancy Dia- mond. The Lindros' family had a photo of their son, with an- other hockey great and former Oshawa General Bobby Orr, which they would donate to the auditorium. The photo is com. plete with autographs. On Wednesday, Mr. Donaldson, along with Mayor Diamond accepted the print from Eric and his father Carl at the Inn On The Park, in Toronto.. The print, which will hang inside the auditorium, will be erected once current renovations at the Civic are complete. oo I ys. es ll EE I I
