Church and Sunday School this week will be held in Epsom Church starting at 11 a.m. and will include a service of Bap- tism. It was a great thrill on Sun- day when the Junior Choir from Uxbridge, under the leadership of Donna VanVegel, sang a number of hymns etc. during the morning church service at Utica. On Nov. 7, the UCW, along with several of their husbands, helped the residents of the Ux- bridge Health Centre play bin- go and celebrate those who had birthdays during the month of November. The UCW met on Nov. 8 at the home of Eileen Slute at 1 p.m. for dessert, followed by meeting and worship. The group of Eileen, Elva Kerry and Irene Fielding led the worship which was centred on peace and visit to Utica church memories of war. They were re- minded of the Presbyterial meeting at St. Matthew's Unit- ed Church in Richmond Hill on Nov. 14, and made plans for the executive to meet on Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Grace Kirk to finalize plans for the Christmas meeting which will once again be a pot luck lunch- eon. Earl Taylor's red United Church hymn book and green "Songs for a Gospel People" went missing after a recent ser- vice at Pine Grove Church. Can anyone offer a clue? Phone 852- 7187. Cassandra Aked celebrated her sixth birthday on Saturday with 10 of her friends at Centen- nial Lane Bowling Alley in Port Perry. Happy birthday, Cassan- dra, also her mother who has a big day on Nov. 14. If you see Irene Fielding this week, wish her a happy birth- day. Sunday visitors with Ruth Ashton were Ken, Beth and Brian Catherwood of Oshawa. Congratulations to Karen Skelding who was among those who graduated from Port Perry High School as an Ontario Scholar. Karen is continuing her education at Trent Univer- sity in Peterborough. Others from this area who re- ceived scholarships or awards were Sara Hawker, Nicole Acer- ra, Lisa Kim and Lisa Taylor. Congratulations, we are all very proud of your accomplish- ments. 2nd Scugog Parents Assoc. All proceeds to benefit 2nd Scugog Scouts. 4th Port Perry Brownies ~The 4th Port Perry Brown- ies spent the weekend at Camp Adamac with 1st Sea- ave Brownies. They en- joyed all the activities involv- ing the "Christmas" theme. Thanks to the leaders and helpers for making the girls' camp experience special! Scugog Island United Church Plans are underway for the Advent/Christmas sea- son at Scugog Island United Church and your Christmas letters will soon be delivered. The Lectionary Bible Study Group will meet on New Year's tickets are now available Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m. The High School Supper Club will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 15from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Choir practice will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. The Youth Group will meet on Friday, Nov. 18 from 6to 7:30 p.m. We will be having a Mis- sion Service on Sunday, Nov. 20 with guest speaker Wendy Rennie. Wendy was a teacher at an International School in Ethiopia and is cur- rently a student minister. The first Sunday in Ad- vent is fast approaching so plans are made for the Hang- ing of the Greens on Satur- day, Nov. 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is for all ages and for our church fami- ly. Bring finger food for the pot luck lunch, pliers, ham- mers, wire cutters, sewing scissors and glue guns. Come out and help decorate the church for the Advent/ Christmas season. Last year we had a great time so mark your calendars now for this church family event spon- sored by the Sunday School Teachers and Support Group. Students from Epsom Public School sang songs and recited poetry during a Remem- brance Day service held Friday at the local school. Guide enrolment night held Shirley (=TS) The Church Family Social bowling night will be Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at Uxbridge Lanes. If you plan on going, call Janice at 985-2562 so lanes can be re- served. Following the bowling, there will be a social time with refreshments back at the Church. Church service for Green- bank is held at 11 a.m. with Sunday School at the same time and the children are busy pre- paring for the Christmas Con-- cert on Dec. 5, so come and join in the worship service with your neighbors. The 1st Greenbank Guide Co. held their enrolment ceremony on Tuesday night. Receiving their enrolment pins were Leanne Barfoot, Anna Fletcher, Sara Hansen, Shannon Ma- hood, Madeline Potier, Caitlin Shields, Ashley Sneyd and Eliz- abeth Stairs. Following the ceremony and campfire, the girls worked on part of their Bakers and Hosties badges by serving their guests homemade goodies, tea, coffee and juice. The Guide Co. has had a busy fall, including a visit to the Scugog Shores Museum, and the girls are now planning for a weekend camp with the 1st Greenbank Pathfinders. They are also selling the choc- olate mint cookies; if you have been missed and would like some, please contact Charlene Shepherd at 985-0731. The Greenbank Lions Club will be hosting a zone meeting for six clubs on Nov. 16. About 30 people will be attending. Each president will explain how their club is helping their local community. Almost 1.5 million Lions throughout the world are helping the needy in hundreds of countries. The Greenbank Club will be donating funds to an eye bank network and to help support a life skills pro- gram for young people. Pub Night - The Lions Clubs holding a Pub Night for Lions and guests on Dec. 7. The cost is $5 per person and it includes British beer, cards, darts and a singalong. Come on out for a great time. Location is the Greenbank Hall from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Phone 985-3723 for tick- ets. The Greenbank Hall Com- mittee is planning a Christmas Dance for Dec. 10 with all pro- ceeds going to the hall. This is our major source of income. The cost is $15 per couple and in- cludes a buffet donated by the hall board members. Euchre ta- bles will be set up downstairs. The cost for the euchre is $5 per person. Phone 985-3723 or 985- 3903 for tickets. The Folk;Music Society had a sold out crowd on Nov. 12. The performers were Anne Walker and the Bird Sisters. Next month, it's the "Whiteley Broth- ers" on Dec. 3. This will definite- ly be a sellout. Congratulations to Wayne Ir- win, from his family and friends, for recently passing and receiving his pilot's licence. Doris and Harry Hill attend- ed the 40th wedding anniver- sary on Saturday evening, at Barrie, for her niece Dorothy and Ron Thomson. Ross and Marie Cookman last Wednesday evening enter- tained Ivan and Doris Rennie, Reg and Marion Johnson and Roy and Mary Hoskin for din- ner in celebration of a special birthday for Ivan. Last Friday evening, there were nine tables of euchre at the hall. Winners for the eve- ning were: Ladies First Verna Draper, Second Jean Rodd, Third Mary Drewery. Mens First Norma Doble, Second Cliff Rodd, Third John Cook. Lucky draws went to Harry Hill, Fred Phoenix and George Harper. We are glad to report Jim Ian- son has returned home after his stay in hospital. Betty McGee has been transferred from Oshawa to Community Memo- rial Hospital in Port Perry and we hope she will soon be able to be home. All ladies are invited to at- tend the Women's Institute meeting at the home of Betty Stone, Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. Thought for the week: The best exercise for the heart is to bend down and help someone. Food bank month Shirley Garvey has returned home to North Carolina after spending two weeks with her mother, Florence Smith. The UCW met on Wednesday evening with 15 ladies answer- ing the roll call with a Christ- mas gift for the friendly visitors group. Janet Vernon and Pat Love led the devotion. Theme "Advent Expectations". Hymn "There's a Voice in the Wilder- ness" was sung, followed by a Thanksgiving prayer. Then eve- ryone did a contest on Remem- brance Day. The reports were given. The treasurer gave a good report on the beef dinner. A committee of Norma Robinson, Helen Jewell, Dianna Brough, were put in to look after gifts for our shut-ins. A Christmas pot luck supper for UCW ladies and friends will be Dec. 7 in the Church hall. The lunch committee surprised Myrtle Simpson when they brought out a candle-lit birth- day cake. Everyone wished Myrtle a happy 85th birthday which is on Nov. 15. Thursday night, the weekly euchre had 12 tables. The win- ners were Doris Hill, Merle St. John, Ann Taylor, George Harp- er, Caroline Haugh, Geoff Gil- ham. Lucky draws - Richard Mann, Doris Hill, Dorothy But- son. Lone hand series winner was George Harper with 21. Sympathy is extended to Rev. Bob and Jan LePage and family on the death of Jan's father last week. A reminder that this is food bank month at the Prince Al- bert United Church. We encour- age you to bring non-perishable foods. Merv and Ilean Pugh attend- ed the 65th birthday and retire- ment party for Dick Puckrin on Sunday afternoon, then were dinner guests with son Wayne and Dianne in Whitby. = 3
