{ | | | a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 15, 1994 PORTS Bantam 1 tournament action On Nov. 12 the Country Style Bantams travelled to beloved Haliburton to participate in the 82nd annual Haliburton Huskies Bantam Hockey Tournament. It was a very long day for every- one, having to wake up with the birds and go to sleep with the owls. Heck, some of us are used to sleepingin past noon on the weekends. After the first period, we were ready to play. Motor City Smitty walked out from the corner and tucked her home got us started with Shane Nortgn picking up the assist. Scott Heffern scored next, knocking in a centering pass from Shaggy who was in the corner. This brought the score to 5-2 in Haliburton's favor. It wasn't looking too good for the Port Perry boys at this point, until Strickert scored, sending us on the comeback trail. We managed to get two more before the third | was over, from Derek Tindall and Shane Norton. A couple of beauties, if you know what I mean. It was four on four in OT, and Shane Norton somehow managed to score once again, top corner! VanSchagen got his third assist of the night. What a generous guy VanSchagen is, always looking to make the pass. Emotions were high after | this overtime victory. We were going nuts. | | Haliburton goalie, Blaze Foster, was shell shocked after this one, as we fired 56 shots at him. Our second game was at 2 p.m. vs the Bancroft Jets. This was another nailbiter. Adam Hobbs played a great game, scoring two gigantic goals on one soaring through the air like Bobby Orr. Come to think of it, Hobbsy's style reminds me of hockey great Bobby Orr. Norty assisted on the first, Tandall on the second. This one was also tied at the end of regulation time, sending us into our eighth period of hockey on the day. Just 11 seconds into overtime Strickert let'er howl from the blue line, beating the ten- | der stick side. Heffy and Tindall assisted. | 3 Once again, we were letting ourselves run wild, celebrating our amazing victory. This sent us to the championship game against the Mississauga Hornets. We wanted to bear this team extra bad, as this was the championship game. We just didn't have enough gas in the tank, to defeat them. We ended up walking home. The final score was 7-2 for the Hornets. Lairdy let a cannon go from the point that ricocheted off someone's lumber and into the net. VanSchagen and Norton assisted. Norty got our other goal, assisted by Heffern. As I said before, wejust didn't have the energy to play to our fullest. The effort was there just the same. Both Lenny Johnston, and Shane Savage played greatin goal all day long. Way to go guys. The summary of the tourney was as follows: VanSchagen four assists, two PIM: Morden four PIM; Smitty one goal; Tindall one goal, three assists; Hobbsy two goals; Norty three goals, three assists; Froaty four PIM; Heffy one goal, three assists; Heasman four PIM; Strickert two goals nine PIM; Lairdy one goal 14 PIM; Skerrat one assist, two PIM: Savage 89 saves; Lenny 64 saves, two PIM. This week's player profile is on sniper Shane Norton. Norty's last two seasons have been pret- ty busy. Two years ago, with the Peewee Legionnaires, Shane scored 64 points. Last season, Shane played on the Techstar Bantams, and scored an astounding 83 goals, to go along with 46 assists. Norty can score a goal from anywhere on the ice. To see Norton weave his magicis worth the price of admission alone. Shane says: "I like to perform. I like to play. Come on outon Monday nights ° at 7 :30 p.m. to watch me and the guys put on a show. It's great entertainment. Bring your neighbors. We'd like to thank our sponsor, Country Style Donuts, and remind any sports fans who may be reading this segment for the first time today, or weekly to come on out at 7:30 p-m. Monday SE nights to watch a great show. There's something for everyone. Atoms crush Lindsay On Nov. 11, Port Perry's Atom As kept their winning streak alive as they took over the game early in the second period and went on to steamroll the visiting Lindsay team by an 8-2 mar- gin chine." He was helped early in the first period as Scott Duncan made a good takeout to avert a breakaway. Lindsay scored first as they cashed in on aloose rebound. Jamie Smith set up the ty- ing goal as he deked around a defenceman and set up Trevor Weisflock. Then Lindsay grabbed the lead again on atwoon one break. Trevor Weisflock tied the score at two all early in the second on a screened wrist shot from the left faceoff dot. Assists were by Jeff Tarbotton and Steven MacLennan. At this point the Malmonts realized that this goalie could be beaten on low shots. Dean VanCamp (from Trevor Weisflock and Steven MacLen- nan) fired a quick low shot to the far corner and Mike LeFort scored (from Justin Moffatt and Jeff Tarbotton) for a quick 4-2 Port lead. Dave Gray rattled one off the post as our forwards were buzzing around the offensive zone. Tyler Houthuys then broke up a two on one Lindsay rush to discourage our opponents further. Port ended the second period up 5-2 as Dean scored an unassisted short-handed beauty. In the third period Trevor Weisflock (best effort player of the game) completed his "hat trick" on a breakaway using Dane as a decoy with assists by rugged Adam Moynes and Tim Jones. Dean also finished off his at trick on a low shot through the five-hole near the end of the game. Late in the period Mike LeFort buried a puck from the slot on an asssit by Jamie Smith who had a fine game for Port. A por- ous Lindsay defence was almost victimized yet again as Dane Gray had anear breakaway after a nice lead pass by Tim Jones. The Malmont lads have been playing enthusiastically and are avoiding excessive penalties. They will be practicing hard next week in preparation for a home game Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. against Port Hope. Also they will be entering their first tourna- ment of the season on Nov. 19in Port Hope! Mike Koury got the win between the pipes for the "Green Ma- | travelled to Minden for a 6 p.m. start. This rink was so far away, the Port players could have packed a picnic lunch for the trip. Perhaps suffering from fa- tigue or "car lag", the Islanders 'went through the motions and made nothing happen, losing to the tune of 5-0. Right off the bat, it was evi- dent that the referees were call- ing this game close, giving no lenience whatsoever, especially to the Port squad. The Islanders spent 32 minutes in the box, in- cluding two five-minute majors issued to Matt Brown and Greg Thompson for pasting Minden players to the boards like flies...slightly from behind. Matt and Greg watched the rest of the game from the stands, where they fell victim to some cheap shots, courtesy of the Minden crowd. Luckily, Port's parents were nearby to keep things under control. All in all, this was not a well- disciplined effort by the Island- ers and it showed both on the scoreboard and on the player's faces afterwards. They would have to play much better. The following Wednesday, the Islanders were hosting Ops Township and things were not much different. Playing a much inferior squad, Port came up with a very lacklustre effort and suffered a 6-3 loss. Port got on the board first, late in the opening period as Trevor Smith fed Jason Logan with a lovely pass up the middle who, in turn, left it for Carl Phoenix who ripped home a there and went on to build a commanding 5-1 lead. Port did not seem to want to get physical in this game and it cost them dearly. A late charge on nice goals by Eric Lucyk and Jon Ja- mieson to narrow the gap to only a pair of goals was foiled in the third as Ops added the final nail in the coffin. If the loss was not bad enough, the casualties from this game were. With Port backstop Jamie Trick already on the shelf with an injured foot, Port lost sniper Carl Phoenix indefi- nitely. Carl suffered a broken collar bone in the third period showed a lot of guts, going off under his own power, and will be sorely missed. Port's roster was further depleted when Greg Thompson picked up an extended vacation for his in- volvement in a slight scuffle in front of the Ops net. Greg main- tains he was persuaded and forced into dropping his mitts and we all believe him, really. Well, some of us do. These loss- es create huge voids in the line- up. Someone will have to take charge if Port wants to climb back into the win column. Port's next action at home is Wednesday, Nov. 16 against Manvers. Eaglettes improving The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes, Novice C ringette team, played in Oshawa against a Novice B team on Sunday, Nov. 6. From the start it looked as if an upset was in the making, as Port Perry controlled the play for the first few minutes of the game. Led by a very strong performance by the team Captain, Jack- ie Pashley, Port Perry allowed only five goals in the first period and cut that down to two in the second. Although losing 7-0, the Eaglettes again showed improvement over their last game. The fact that Oshawa only scored seven goals indicates the ex- ceptional goaltending provided by Heather Imrie and the im- proved defensive play of Assistant Captain Christine Cotie, Whitney Reid, Holly Allison, Sarah Aldridge, Ceilidh Baxter, Nicole Ansell and Hailey Wilson. Up against a more skillful opponent, the offense was unable to get on track. There was, however, an obvious improvement in the performances of Shannon Urquhart, Jenna Davison, Amanda Curry, Jill Hunter, Shannon Hatfield and Jessica oe. Our next game is at 3 p.m. in the Scugog Arena, Saturday, Nov. 19, against Richmond Hill.
