Dr. Mueller, who has been helping asthmatics through chiropractic treatment by manipulating the spine, said she has got an even more responsive relief for patients by incorporating botanical medicines into their therapy. More than $2 billion a year is spent in Canada in health care costs for asthma and the incidence of the condition continues to climb. In the past 20 years there has been an increase of 33 per cent in asthma patients, Dr. Mueller said, noting that the death rate has also doubled between 1979 and 1987. Asthma is a chronic affliction of the air passages causing them to constrict too readily. Asthma Awareness Day (Nov. 29) brings the message that all ages are susceptible to the disease, which is most easily treated in its early stages. Chiropractic treatment has helped many of Dr. Mueller's patients with their breathing, while reducing the usage of their inhalers and medications. "Catching it early as possible is always better. It is easier to treat symptoms when they are milder and the response for the treatments is better," she said. Symptoms of asthma can include wheezing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing and coughing, but Dr. Mueller says with the appropriate treatment these can be reversed. There are many types of asthma including childhood asthma, occupational asthma which can be caused by bacteria and animal dander, drug induced asthma from such medications as aspirin, and additive asthma from food and beverage additives. The goal of current research is to better understand the disease mechanism and to improve methods of treatment. One study currently underway is a two-year study using chiropractic treatment specifically geared towards childhood asthma. The study, taking place at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, is focusing on the effects of chiropractics on asthma. The goal is to see if a dysfunction or nerve problem in the spine can trigger a disturbance in the organs which in turn causes inflammatory changes, as happens in asthma, Dr. Mueller said. Charlie Bourgeois has been visiting Dr. Mueller since September of this year and can't say enough about what her techniques have done for his condition. Mr. Bourgeois, who has been suffering from asthma for many years, said he is 100 per cent better since seeking treatment and "I would recommend anyone with my problem to seek (this treatment). She does a wonderful job," he said. For the first two weeks Dr. Mueller treated Mr. Bourgeois three times a week and he was using his inhaler every two hours. Since his first visit in September he now only needs to visit the clinic every second week and uses his puffer only two to three times a day, he said. As the reversal process takes place patients' sense of smell and taste improve along with their breathing, she said.
