IGA Juniors win one In last week's play, Port's IGA Junior A rin- gous team came away with a split. In Tues- ay's match, Port travelled to itby to chal- lenge what looks like their toughest competition in the league this year. Although the IGA squad had won a previous league game against Whitby, a pre-season matchup had an opposite outcome. This game was in a sense go- ing to be the rubber. oth Whitby and Port Perry teams play with a similar strategy - skate hard; skate fast and move the ring down the ice - quick! Fans saw exactly that! The pace of this game was unbe- lievably quick - end to end action and unrelent- ing checking. This exciting action persisted throughout the first period with the only real break in the action being a Port penalty taken in the last minute of the period. Whitby wasn't long capitalizing on this opportunity and man- aged to got the game's first goal only 19 seconds before the end of the first frame. The quality of play and the pace of the game continued as the second period got underway. It wasn't until after Whitby had netted their second goal did Port Perry finally get on the scoreboad. Lisa Bonser beat Whitby's goalie af- ter taking a pass from Janine Hammond on a play started by Brooke Shanley. The IGA squad had numerous scoring chanc- es during the game but our sharp shooters just couldn't find the mark. Rings hit crossbars and goalposts and even landed on top of the net, but no more were going to go behind the Whitby backstop. Whitby locked this one up within the last three minutes of the game by scoring their third and fourth goals while Port was serving time for multiple misdemeanors. Sunday's matchup pitted us against the Cen- tral Region All-Star team in an exhibition game. It should be noted that the All-Stars weren't playing at full strength. One reason was that some of the girls were out of town at tournaments. The other reason is that six of the All-Stars are members of our own IGA Jun- ior team. In order to balance the numbers, Port gave up Lisa Bonser and Natasha Burgess to the opposition during the first period and Ja- nine Hammond and Bonni-Jo Norton for the second. This necessitated some re-alignment of the Port squad with Dianne Vanderligt and Dana Hooker moving back and taking on de- fensive duties. It took the IGA girls a little while to get into this game. Although they were certainly up for it, they were perhaps a little intimidated play- ing against the best in the region. The All-Stars struck early in the game with Lisa Bonser get- ting the first two goals of the game with less than five minutes off the clock. Cara Vander Slagt got Port's scoring machine started after taking a pass from Jennifer Elliot and then put- ting a nice move on the goalie. Shona Moase tied the score after picking up a beautiful back hand" pass from Janine Hammond as she was leading defenders behind the net. Less than two minutes later, Shona's pass taken from Brooke and fed up to Laura Hooker ut Port in front for the first time in the game. he lead however was short lived - the All-Stars came back only moments later to knot the score once again. This see-saw battle continued throughout the remainder of the period. Both Shona and Laura scored their second goals of the game, Shona's being set up by Jill Topham's pass while Jennifer earned the assist on Lauras. Lisa scored her third goal of the first half playing for the All-Stars and helped end the period in a 5-5 tie. During the break the girls switched sweaters, Lisa and Natasha now back with their home squad and Bonni-Jo and Janine wearing the All- Star colors. Dianne moved back up to forward and Dana switched to the defensive position. With play underway Lisa quickly put Port into the lead. Jennifer Elliot picked up her third as- sist on this one. It wasn't long however before Bonni-Jo, (now with the opposition) drove in from the blue line and put one behind Port's All- Star goalie, Katie Senyk. (We're quietly wonder- ing why Katie's only letting Port Perry girls on the All-Star team score). Scoring in this game ended with Cara picking up her second goal and Shona earning her fourth point of the game. Even though the scor- ing had ended, the attack by the All-Stars didn't. The strong defense unit anchored by Jana Senyk kept the opponents at bay. The final 7-6 victory for Port Perry should be an uplifting, confidence builder as the girls and coaches pre- pare for the team's first tournament of the year in St. Catharines. Pineridge Atoms win 5-3 On Thursday night, Pine- ridge Atoms were host to the Oshawa Canadiens. This was the third time for these two teams to meet this season. Matt Skerratt started the game in the right direction with a quick goal at 2:40 into the game, as- - sisted by Joey Schembri and Mike Milligan. A few minutes later, David Halward scored for Port, assisted by T.J. Robins. Shane Fischer in net for Pine- ridge was busy as the Canadi- ens put on the pressure. At the 4:00 mark, they got their way. Port came right back with a beauty goal by Geoff Simpson, assisted by Spencer Churchill, ending the first with a 3-1 lead. The second period was exciting with great defence work by both teams. Zack Fis was strong be- tween the pipes for Pineridge. In the third period, the Cana- diens got an early goal followed by a third, evening the score. Clayton Gilmore, an ex-Port Perry player, made Pineridge work hard to get the next goal scored by Spencer Churchill, as- sisted by Geoff Simpson and Derek Bond. Late in the third, T.J. Robins scored a great goal, assisted by Glen Thompson and Dylan Harper. The game ended 5-3 for Pineridge. On Saturday night, Pineridge Sports travelled to Uxbridge for a game that ended up 8-5 for Uxbridge. Coach Paul Milligan told the boys to forget about this game and chalk it up to experni- ence. Last time Port met Ux- bridge they came out on top Bridge results with a 2-1 win. Pineridge Sports meets Stouffville on Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in Port Perry. to end the scoring. Swamp wins tournament The first game of the afternoon pitted Trader Sam's against Raven's Renovations with the Trader's squad emerging victori- ous with a 5-2 score. Charlie Dennis scored twice with Ken St. Amant netting on of the other markers for the winning team. Replying for Raven's it was Dan Van Loon with both goals. The B&R Swampers and Blackstock Brewers hooked up in one of their usual hard fought battles with it ending in a draw even after a single overtime period. B&R got on the board first with Mike Butt scoring from Jason Price. The Brewers then tied it up on Gord Bryans shot with Ron Wagg gaining the assist. There was no further damage done in the second period and the teams went to overtime with Black- stock on the power play which they turned into a goal by Scott MacLennan from Tom Wotten. Brian Robinson replied for B&R The last game of the day was also close with The Framer's Gallery pushing the league leading Brooklin Bruins to over- time as well. Luc Collard from Roger Ramelli got the ball rolling for Brooklin late in the opening period. It wasn't until the midway point of the second that Framer's tied it up with Paul Brough scoring from Tyler Renaud. With 56 seconds left in the overtime frame, Collard and Ramelli re- versed roles to put Brooklin in the win column. Five of the league's teams attended the Cannington tourna- ment over the weekend with B&R coming home the victors. To get there they went through Blackstock and Brooklin. Traders' and the Framer's were also in attendance.
