BE A rn I TN I SA A ---- IP-------- "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 - 15 w------ SPORTS Week 16 brought the reign of the Harrison Blazers to an end as the high-flying Crandell's Gamblers handed them their first defeat of the season! However, the Blazers remain in first place going into the "Special Christmas Week- end" next week, tied with the Monsma Charg- ers with 25 points a piece! The other big news on Sunday was the suc- cess of Bill Owen's Operation Scugog Cam- paign for SHL, members! A special thank you is extended to all league members who supported this cause from organizers, Bill "Roc" Owen and Billy Eade. Devils vs Sharks Game one saw the Pizza Delight Devils get their act together to defeat the Van World Sharks 6-4 and bring their season to a fairly re- spectable "500" atop the Gold Division. Bob Beveridge led the Devils with a goal and three assists. Todd Healey also got in on the act with a pair of counters and a single helper. Ken Smart Jr., Steve Dunn and Bruce Smith with a "200 ft. empty netter," all had singled. Ken Smart Sr. had a pair of assists, while Smith, Tim Ashbridge, and Bruce Gracie counted one each to complete the Devil attack. Phil Cochrane paced the Sharks with two goals and an assist. Mark Jobb and Wayne Fox both had a goal and an assist each, while Reg Templeman, Mike "Tate" Adam, Randy Pros- ser and fill-in goaltender Don Card figured in the scoring with single helpers. Phantoms vs Comets Game two saw the Pineridge Phantoms dom- inate the Compton Comets to pull once again to within one point of the leaders! Steve Fox led the Phantom parade with two goals and three assists for the fine five point outing! Jim Fowler netted two and singles went to Sean Fewer and Robert Van Camp. Clarence Stephenson picked up three assists, while Mike Geer had a pair and singles went to Lee Steeves, Brian Samis and Bill Van Camp in this strong Phantom outing. For the Comets, Dave Dickson and Bill Weis- flock picked up the goals, while Ron Zapara- nuik and Jeff Johnstone shared a pair of as- sists each. Chargers vs Hawks Game three saw the Monsma Chargers put a stop to the J&D Hawk win streak, while they pulled back into a first place tie with the Blaz- ers! It was all Chargers as they "Cruised" to a 5-0 victory to give Don Card the shutout. Bill Bridge led the way with a pair of goals. Blazers lose first game Brad Hurst, Tony Oxley and Jason Warner all added singles. Assists found Dave Thompson, Bob Lee, Lee Wilbur, Paul VanCamp and John Robertson all with singles as the Monsma crew got back to their winning ways! Clippers vs Aces Game four saw the Fitzgerald Clippers "trump" the Taylor Aces 3-1 as Clipper forward Larry Pilkey went on yet another scoring spree! It seems that the vacation to the south has brought Pilkey back with even more moves and his "hat-trick" was all the Clippers needed! Jody Peters notched two assists with Glen Hudson counting the single. The lone Ace reply saw Mike Kane find the net from Dave Brownson and Ken Little. Gamblers vs Blazers Game five brought the spectators to the fence and sent them away "buzzing" as the Crandell's Gamblers ended the streak with a strong 3-1 vic- tory over the Harrison Blazers! This proved to be the best game of the day as the Harrison gang poured on the gas, but the Gamblers stood strong to give the rest of the teams a gift in time for Christmas! Glen McCoy, Carl Durham and Dave Bour- geois had the Gambler tallies. Mark Decosta had a big game as he set up all three goals! Dur- ham also had an assist to complete this Gambler victory. The lone Blazer reply saw John Harman net one from Darcy Milligan and Dave Roth but that was all "Old Man Scrooge," Bob Strickert, in the Gambler net would allow! Well hockey fans, this sets up new meaning to the "Christmas Special" next weekend! Catch all the action on both Saturday and Monday, as the SHL completes the 1994 part of the season! Country Style Bantams kept busy with games The Country Style Donut Bantam As have been fairly busy this last week, having three games. First, on Monday, Dec. 12, we were at home against Uxbridge. This was a great game, as Shane Savage came up big. He stopped all 36 shots he faced for the shutout. At the other end of the ice, we managed to score five goals, to send the Uxbridge players home with tears in their eyes. Our first was scored early by Mike Morden who picked up a pass from Nick Skerrat and cut to the net. Some how Mike man- aged to flip the puck over the tender's shoulder and into the net. Laird also assisted, getting the puck over to Skerrat at the far end of the ice. Hnatko scored next, sliding the puck on the ice and between Uxbridge goal- tender, Jack Marks' legs. Smit- ty and Morden, the two speed demons assisted. Shawn then scored again, this time going to the top cor- ner, assisted by Adam Hobbs. Hnatko was on fire. I think that Hnatko hates Uxbridge because he was playing with a twinkle in his eye. Our fourth goal was scored by tough guy, Adam Hobbs, and assisted by Rob Murphy, who made a beautiful pass up the middle, right onto Hobbsy's tape. Unfortunately, Hobbs had to leave the game early with a bruised shoulder- blade, and scratched arm, after slamming into the end of the rink, with two Bridge players on top of him. Our final goal was scored on the power play. Colin Laird kept in a clearing attempt by Uxbridge and got the puck in front to Smitty, who slapped'er home down low. Hnatko also as- sisted for his third point on the _ night. We played well in this one. The only down side is, I don't think that Uxbridge will ever want to come back to play a friendly game of hockey. Oh well. The next night we were off to our favorite destination, Co- bourg. The barn seemed to be extra cold on this night, and the reffing was what was to be ex- pected. We came up a goal ~ short, as we only played two pe- riods of hockey. In the middle frame, we were skating around like it was pub- lic skating. What was going on? We were short Murphy for this one. He injured his wrist the previous night, lending a hand to the Port Perry Panthers. Goalscorers were Tindall, Hnatko, Strickert, and Morden. Lenny made some crazy saves in goal, but not that much help was offered in the way of clear- ing the puck, and defenders out of our end. Norton, Strickert, Morden, Shaggy, Froaty, Hnat- ko and Laird all picked up as- sists. On Sunday we were in Stouff- ville to complete the road trip. We were pretty sloppy in the first two, and it didn't get too much better in the third. This one ended in a tied 1-1 game. Our only goal was scored on the power play. Norton got the puck to Murphy on the point. With a Stouffville forward coming at Rob hard, he made a great move, using a spinarama, and then slid the puck to his defence partner (at the time) Colin Laird. Lairdy broke in from the line, and got a shot on goal, only to watch Strickert slam in the re- bound. That was it. It was a tie game, that should have been won by us. This week's player profile is on Shawn Hnatko. TKO is from the Brooklin area, and has moved to Scugog in the last few months. Nat King Cole has three goals, and two assists in the past three games, and is on fire. Tatanka is a great guy, but ou'd hate to be playing against im, because he's a mean suck- er out on the ice. I think that it has something to do with his ex- perience with soccer when he was just a young kid. He said "Yeah, I used to love to play soc- cer when I was akid. It helps me out in hockey as well because it helped my kicking skills. Now I can kick the puck (or whatever) up to my stick with ease." Shawn missed a few games this year, and now that he's back, he wants to make up lost time. "Come out to the arena on " Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. to watch a great display of natural talent and raw power in our team. We may not have been playing completely up to par lately, but we'll get back on track. We just need a little sup- port," says Hnatko. Nat King Cole is overjoyed by the quick arrival of the Christ- mas season, and can be heard game in and game out singing Jungle Bells or something! It just adds to the excitement. 'Remember folks, Monday nights at 7:30 p.m., excluding Boxing Day because it's includ- ed in the twelve days of Christ- mas. Attendance has been down as of late, making it hard for the team to go on. Come on out eve- rybody. It's amazing to watch. Port Perry Country Style Ban- tam season tickets are still available, and they make great Christmas presents. Go to Gate 1 if you're interested.
