18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 1 0, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS re It is a matter of honor to win your home town tournament in front of all those fans who have heard about your fantastic team, but have never seen you in action. Well, the Port IGA Junior A team, under the guid- ance of coaches Senyk, Shanley and Hooker, gave it their all this past weekend at the Coun- try Style Ringette Tournament. However, they came up with sil- ver after putting up a good fight against Pembroke, one of the best teams they have faced this year. What a way to start with a bang! The Friday night game 'happened to be against Whitby, the one team in the Junior league which is the most com- petitive for Port. Port beat out Whitby for gold in the St. Cath- arines tournament, while Whit- by won the Christmas Mark- ham tournament with an overtime sudden death goal against our Port Juniors. Well, it was our turn this game, with a final score of 3-2 for the home town girls. Shona Moase got two of the goals - one on her whirlybird play, and the other on Port's patented hide-the-goalie event. Lisa Bonser scored the winning goal with two minutes left in the game as the determined IGA squad bombarded the Whitby goalie with several hard and ac- MoJacks win two From Page 17 place in league scoring. The two teams couldn't score up until Leslie's goal and it opened up the floodgates for the MoJacks. Kearns scored his sec- ond of the game just over a min- ute later when Dennis and Pi- geau helped set him up and make it 3-0. He had to pull the puck out of the air before shoot- ing it high into the net. Kearns was proud of the goal and ex- plained his motivation for the two-goal performance. "I missed Friday's game (a 10- 1 ModJack win) so I had to get some points tonight," he said. CHAD KEARNS Dennis kept the puck bounc- ing into the Bobcaygeon net also when he scored next for Port Perry. It put the ModJacks up 4- 0 with Leslie and Scott Heas- man drawing assists. Dennis al- ways has his motor running on the ice and it's shown most of all when he's killing a penalty. He's always in forechecking the opposition fiercely and Sunday night was no different. During the second period, with the Mo- Jacks still holding a slim 1-0 lead, Dennis showed his skills when he kept following the Bul- lets in their own zone and he made it very difficult for Bob- caygeon to get anything start- ed. Two minutes after Dennis scored, Trevor Bremnor round- ed out the scoring makingit 5-0, which turned out to be the final score. Byers and Steve Stani- land were the MoJacks drawing assists on this one. The goal came after a lot of hard work in the game by the quick winger. Earlier in the game, Bremnor had been in the Bobcaygeon zone creating traffic in front of the net when a ModJack slapshot from the point hit him in the back. He got up and into the play again, though. He skated hard to the corner after the puck only to be upended and slide hard into the boards. He got up slowly, but still stayed with the play, skating over and giving a hit to a Bullet attempt- ing to clear the puck. He limped to the bench after that, but on his next shift came out flying as though nothing had happened. He's been taking that kind of damage all season and just keeps comingback for more. MoJack netminder Chris Faulkner earned the shutout and felt good about helping the team to a win. He's played well since joining the MoJacks last month and he received his Mo- Jack initiation haircut last Tuesday. The hairstyle was popular with the team but they shaved off what little hair he had left on Sunday after the game. Faulkner didn't have to face very much pressure in the first period of the game facing only three shots near the end of the period, but it didn't bother him. "They (the MoJacks) kept it in the other end most of the time so I had to keep myself moving to try and stay sharp," he said. The ModJacks' next home game is Sunday, Jan. 16 when the Little Britain Merchants travel to Port Perry. The Mo- Jacks will be looking to pay back the Merchants after their tough loss last week. curate shots. Katie Senyk in goal had one of her excellent games, frustrating the Whitby shooters who are accustomed to a lot more celebrating in a game. On Saturday at noon, the Port Juniors met Hamilton in what turned out to be a very physical match with the "box" occupied most of the time to the tune of 34 penalty minutes. Lisa, having an excellent game, started the scoring with less than 40 seconds gone. Tasha Burgess, taking advantage of an unexpected deflection, took Port ahead 2-0. Hamilton im- mediately got one back, but Lisa, with one of her hard throw-me-to-the-ice shots, scored again. Suddenly, Port had two in the box, and the excellent penalty killing of Brooke Shanley, Bon- ni-Jo Norton and Laura Hook- er, using sticks, bodies, skates, and many other legal methods, kept Hamilton at bay. Laura was even able to take a hard ringing shot which unfortu- nately pinged off the goal post. With 25 seconds left in the first period and two penalized Ham- ilton players in the box, Lisa scored again to make a hat trick. Midway through the second, Diane Vanderligt, using the whirlybird play, made no mis- take and put Port's fifth goal in. Dana Hooker and Cara Vander- Slagt pummelled the goalie with shot after shot until one went in on a hard shot from Dana. Hamilton matched this goal almost immediately, and kept up the pressure for the rest of the period. The final score was 6-3 for Port Perry, with as- sists going to Dana, Lisa, Ja- nine and Cara. After having watched an ex- cellent match between Whitby and Pembroke, in which Pem- broke won the game with three seconds left, the Port Juniors were pumped and ready to go at the 7:30 p.m. game against Pembroke. This team has small but talented and aggressive players, and immediately took it to Port with Katie making six * hard stops in the first two min- utes. With each of the Port players giving her all, using ac- curate passing and teamwork, this exciting and hard-fought game ended in a 4-4 tie. IGA Juniors win silver medals Port goals were scored by Shona, Janine, Lisa and Brooke on a beauty passing play. As- sists went to Jana, Brooke, Sho- na, Bonni-Jo and Natasha. Only total team effort kept this one to a tie, and Laura, Jill Top- ham, Jen Elliot, Cara, Dana and Katie were equally a part of the victory! The championship match Sunday afternoon was well- attended by noisy Port fans. However, the gold was not to be. The IGA Juniors worked hard together, traded goal for goal with Pembroke, and ended up on the wrong end of an 8-7 score. Port goals were scored by Ja- nine and Shona with two, Lau- ra,Jen and Lisa. Assists went to Cara, Lisa, Shona, Janine, Lau- ra and Jana. The Pembroke team, who is accustomed to winning all their games easily, paid the Port Jun- jors a well-deserved compli- ment when they said the game against Port Perry was the most challenging one they have played this year.
