26 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 24, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Port Atom A's tentative in tough 6-3 loss to Pickering On November 18 Port Perry's Atom A's played an exhibition game on the road in Pickering. Goalie Mike Koury saw a ton of rubber around his net as Picker- ing pelted him en route to a 6-0 first period lead. Offensive op- portunities were by Trevor Weisflock, Tim Jones, Steve MacLennan, Mike Lefort and Dean VanCamp on a breaka- way. Tyler Houthuys made a good poke check near our net and Tim dove to successfully foil a Pickering rush. Port failed to cover properly on faceoffs and played tenta- tively. The "Green Machine" to their credit, tightened up their checking and scored three goals over the next two periods while not allowing any more Picker- ing goals. Darcy Stephens was a magician at times (between the pipes) in earning the coaches vote for "Best Effort". Port's goals were scored by Jeff (from Trevor Lance and Ja- mie Smith), and Adam Moynes on a rebound off Dean's shot. Tim disrupted a Pickering clearout to start the play. Jamie notched our third goal from Adam and Mike Lefort to capi- talize on a power play. In the second Mark Duncan found himself all alone with the puck off a faceoff, but the agile Pick- ering goalie stoned him. Mike Koury returned to our net in the third and stopped the chances that came his way. Nice comeback by the Mal- monts to let them leave the rink with their chins up. Lindsay came to town on Jan- uary 20 to open our O.M.H.A. playoff round. Once again the Malmonts had to suck up a loss as they had too many unforced turnovers and too few success- ful passes. The Lindsay goalie played extremely well in cover- ing his crete area. Darcy played equally well on many Lindsay forays into our zone as our lads frequently forgot their lessons in team defence. The Malmonts opened the scoreboard when Jeff Tarbotten went to the net for a rebound off Trevor Weisflock's shot. Jamie assisted. Lindsay scored after a giveaway and again from a two on two rush to win the first peri- od. Mike Lefort scored on a back- hand deflection off Dean's pass to tie the score at three in the second frame. Adam missed a breakaway chance shortly after a setup by Dean. Lindsay pressed as well, but Darcy came up with two big saves. Dean used his strength to go in all alone but missed on a back- hander. Lindsay went up after a deflection from a defence- > man's skate. On a powerplay we edged back to 4-3 as Justin Mof- fatt scored after a beautiful de- layed deke move by centre Tre- vor Lance and an assist by Jeff. In the second, Dane Grey broke up a couple of rushes and Scott Duncan blocked several clearouts as the defencemen were working hard to turn mo- mentum in our favor. Sloppy clearing led to the winning Lindsay goal as one of our for- wards got trapped too high near our defensive blue line. This came shortly after Jamie and Mark had a two on one opportu- nity turned away. Justin Moffatt again scored on a late third period powerplay to give the Port fans some hope. Full marks to Lindsay for their first win of the season over the Malmonts in this one. Next home playoff game will be Janu- ary 26 at 8 p.m. Come over a lit- tle earlier and watch the Mo- jacks/Durham Police Benefit game in support of our hospital. Teresa will be in uniform for this one! TUESDAY, JANUARY 31 Alzheimer Durham monthly Uxbridge Support Group meeting - It was Oshawa who was first on the scoreboard with goals in each of the two periods. With the solid goaltending team of Scott Honey and Kurtis Wager along with the defensive pairing of Gordon Smith and Justin Koury, Ryan Hnatko and Joey Lane they shut down Oshawa's offensive altogether. The third period was all Port Perry's with the first goal com- ing at the eight minute mark, when Teddy Howarth scored with assists going to Alex Nico- lau and Jordan Froats. - One minute later Kevin Rob- ins scored with assists going to Pat Lewis and Ryan Hnatko. A strong game was played by Tyl- er Weisflock, Chet Martin, Lu- cas Fraser and Justin Shinn. It was a goaltender's game on Tuesday, Jan. 17 when the Pearce Auction Major Novice team was invited to Sunderland for an exhibition game. The teams were evenly matched and there was constant end to end action. Chet Martin had a couple of good shots on net in the second period with the help of Teddy Howarth and Lucas Fraser. Tyler Weisflock skated around the Sunderland defence for a couple of good scoring tries. In the third period it looked like Port Perry might get on the scoreboard when Ryan Hnatko made some good passes to Jus- tin Shinn who took a couple of shots on net. Pat Lewis, Jordan Froats, and Alex Nicolau were effectively backchecking throughout the game. Gordon Smith made some good defensive plays to cut down Sunderland's scoring chances. Justin Koury and Joey Lane also played a solid defen- sive game, but the undisputed stars of the game wee the goal- tenders for both teams. Despite all the hustling of both teams the score remained 0-0. Scott Honey and Kurtis Wa- gar shared the goaltending du- ties for the Auctioneers, both making some super saves. Good work guys. In this way, a husband and wife, for exam- ple, could play together for the season. Or two men or two wom- en who are good friends could be "partnered" on the schedule for the season. Players can choose their playing partners, or the league will designate partners for people for whom it doesn't matter. Once registration is com- plete, and the number of players and teams are con- firmed, the schedule will be drawn up and players will be given their playing times for the entire season. Games will be scheduled for Saturday morn- ings, and the season will run 14 weeks, from May 20 - Aug. 19. The NoT League will be run on a user pay basis. Organizers do not want to target local busi- nesses for sponsorship, which might hurt funding for the mi- nor ball programs (besides, who would want to sponsor a league with no teams!) Registration fees for the season will be $30 per player, and this will cover the cost of all league equipment, other than player gloves. Regis- tration forms will be available at local stores, or people can contact Ron Martyn at 986- 5952 for details or to make ar- rangements to register.
