Malmont Atoms knock On a very frosty Feb. 5, the Malmont Farm Atom As complet- ed their playoff resurgence as they travelled to Lindsay and captured a 4-2 series win on the strength of a 2-1 victory there. This was their third consecutive win over Lindsay and excel- lent penalty killing was the key to their win as they had to deal with a 9-3 imbalance in penalties. D'Arcy Stephens was un- beatable until the third period when Lindsay finally capital- 1zed on one of the four penalties called against us in this period. Jamie Smith gave his team a very quick start as he blocked a clearing pass and found himself face to face with the Lindsay goalie with just 13 seconds gone in the game. He beat the goalie on the glove side. Our only other goal of the game was by Dean Van Camp who was set up nicely by linemate Adam Moynes who had received a pass from Mike LeFort. Defenceman Dane Gray made several good coverup plays to deny Lindsay chanc- Congratulations go to the coaches and all the players on win- ning their first playoff round. Scott, Tyler and Tim have been giving goalies D'Arcy and Mike improved protection. Forwards Trevor Lance, Jeff, Justin, Adam, Mike, Dean, Mark, Jamie and Trevor Weisflock have also been working to beat their opponents in all three zones on Continued hard work and smart play will be necessary to get of playoffs The defense of Dane, Steve, Saturday, Feb. 4 was a busy_ day for the Pearce Auction Ma- jor Novice team with two exhibi- tion games. The first game, against a Whitby Novice team, was played in the morning in Little Britain. It was a close- checked game and both teams created several scoring opportu- nities. Chet Martin played a strong game, handling the puck .. well. He and Pat Lewis had some good shots on net with help from the wingers Teddy Howarth, Alex Nicolau, Jordan Froats and Lucas Fraser. Kurtis Wagar and Scott Hon- ey were both sharp in net. With the support of their defence, Gordon Smith, Justin Shinn, Ryan Hnatko and Justin Koury, they allowed Whitby only one goal. Port Perry won the game 5-1 with Gordon Smith picking up a hat trick and Justin Shinn scoring the other two. That evening the Auctioneers met the Oshawa Red Wings at the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa. The last game be- tween these two teams ended in was dominant. They started off strong with the puck never leav- ing Oshawa's end in the first pe- riod. Lucas Fraser opened the scoring for Port Perry in the first minute of play with Chet Martin getting the assist. A minute after, Pat Lewis scored with Alex Nicolau and Teddy Howarth picking up the assists. Pat, playing a strong game, scored again two minutes later. Teddy Howarth and Justin Shinn earned the assists on that one. Still in the firsi period, Lucas made a nice play, taking the puck behind the net, wrapping it around and puttingitin front ofthe net where Chet jammed it in. Joey Lane also picked up an assist on the goal. Oshawa scored their first goal with only eight seconds left in the first pe- riod. The Red Wings picked up their pace in the second period which resulted in more end-to- end action. The score was 7-2 going into the third period bu the Red Wings wouldn't give up and Port Perry's defence had to work hard to clear the puck out of their end. Joey Lane and Ryan Hnatko; Justin Koury and Justin Shinn were solid throughout the game but the Red Wings picked up two more goals early in the period. The Port Perry boys were still going strong with many good passes. At 4:33 Alex Nicolau took a good shot on net. For game one they faced off against Picker- Techstar wins tournament and first round of playoffs On Jan. 28 the Techstar Bantams went to on a goal assisted by Sanderson and Weber. Puckrin got his second of the game assisted by Weber. The Techstars ran out the clock and came ing. The first period saw the Techstars control most of the play but had nothing to show for it until the final minute. With 20 seconds on the clock Dan Lyons put one home with assists to - Scott Harper and JP Copeland. At the end of the first it was 1-0 Techstars. Pickering got that one back early in the sec- away with a 4-2 win and their second tourna- ment win of the season. With the Scarborough Tournament under their belts it was back to playoff action against Uxbridge on Feb. 1 at the Port Perry arena. The Techstars had a 2-0 series lead in the best of seven series. Early in the game Dave Gainey opened the scoring from Sanderson and Weber. Weber gave them a 2-0 lead, assisted by JP Copeland. Just over a minute later McCready made it 3-0 from Puckrin and Campbell. Uxbridge got one back before the second peri- od ended. Campbell got the only goal of the third from Weber and Wyatt Park (welcome back Parky!) On the third it was off to Uxbridge for game four where the Techstars could end the series in the form of a sweep. Pickering tied it up late in the second period. In the third the Techstars opened the flood gates. Baxter struck first from Glen McCready. Then Troy Campbell scored assisted by Baxter. Glen McCready made it 5-2 on a goal assisted by Campbell. Late in the game Baxter added one more to make it 6-2. Paul Shrigley played a great game between the pipes for the Techstars. a tie but this time Port Perry - Juveniles lose with a lacklustre effort After a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening in Port Perry, the Key- Bar Office Equipment Juve- niles limped into Bradford Sat- urday night and gave their Juveniles two points in a lack- lustre game for Port Perry right from the opening whistle. Final score 8-0 Bradford. Ever since the injury to Sean McEnaney, this team shows lit- tle resemblance to the team that lost just two league games all season. The leadership qual- ity that Sean brought to the team, not only on the ice but also in the dressing room, have not been picked up by anyone, and is clearly evident by the ef- fort on theice. With the absence of Jody Lo- gan, Todd Smart, Darrell Vand- er Slagt, and of course Sean McEnaney, this team seems frustrated, confused and disor- ganized as to what to do out on the ice. With so many key players out of the lineup, the coaching staff have been forced to shuffle the lines numerous ways to try to get some spark into the team, but nothing seems to work. The coaching staff have tried to get this team motivated but at this age and with little time for prac- tice, self-motivation has to come from within themselves if they ever hope to get by Bradford and into the semi-finals. However, we have beaten stronger teams this year with good old fashioned hustle and if we could get that back and the right attitude, we could easily grab the next five points and say goodbye to Bradford. The next game in this series goes Thursday night Feb. 9 at 9:15p.m. In game two their opponents were Bramp- ton. Dillian Weber opened the scoring early in the game on an unassisted goal. Brampton tied it up just a few minutes later, then took a 2-1 lead. Scott Sanderson tied it up on a goal assisted by Campbell and Dave Ka- minga. The second period saw Doug Short put up some excellent goaltending to keep the score 2- 2. Among some of his great saves was a Bramp- ton penalty shot but the Brampton player could not find an opening with Shortin there. Scott Sanderson got the game winner early in the third assisted by Ryan Puckrin. The Techstars next victim was Stoney Creek in the tournament's championship game. Puckrin opened the scoring midway through the first assisted by Campbell. Stoney Creek tied it at 1-1 early in the sec- ond. Troy Campbell gave them a 2-1 lead assisted by Sanderson and Weber. Stoney Creek tied it up again midway through the second. Dan Lyons ended the second with a 3-2 lead Uxbridge tied it up early in the second at one all. Ian Parliament gave them a 2-1 lead and the Techstars never looked back. That goal was as- sisted by Sanderson and Gainey. Weber made it 3-1 less than 50 seconds later assisted by Baxter and Campbell. Puckrin made it 4-1 as Weber's shot deflected off his knee and in. Dave Gainey also assisted on this one. Late in the second, Puckrin took a pass from Sanderson and went in alone to make it 5-1. That one was on an Uxbridge power play. In the third Campbell added two more, one from Gainey and Baxter and the other from San- derson and Copeland toend it 7-1. Paul Shrigley played a great game for the Techstars in goal. The Techstars showed some good discipline as the Uxbridge players got a little dirty knowing their season was over and wanted to fight, but due to some good discipline, no one (on the Tech- stars) got tossed. The Techstars next victim in playoff action is Trenton. We'll keep you posted on home game times.
