Scugog Township council told chairman Frank Fielding, they support the event, but would not give an immediate answer on requested seed money or a grant for the use of Scugog Are- na. Last July long weekend saw the first ever Fields of Dreams tournament in Scugog, as 68 teams descended onto local ball fields throughout the township. - All money raised during last season's successful tournament went to Port Perry Minor Soft- ball Association towards the purchase of lights for the new di- amonds at Scugog Centre. Mr. Fielding told council he is hoping to attract 112 teams to the tournament this year, bringing an estimated 4,000- 6,000 visitors to the area for the long weekend. The tournament is open to both men, women and mixed ball teams, takes place on ball diamonds in Scugog. Confirmed fields include Scugog Centre, Palmer Park, Port Perry Fair- grounds, Seagrave, Greenbank, Blackstock and S.A. Cawker Public School. Mr. Fielding is projecting a profit of approximately $15,000 from the three-day event, which will once again be put towards lights for the Scugog Centre ball diamonds. Mr. Fielding assured council the 16-teams of the Scugog Mens Slo-Pitch League would be providing all the work in- volved in the tournament and the costs for clean-up and main- tenance of ball diamonds was included in the operating bud- get. A change in the divisions also has been made this year, as one has been dropped, allowing an increase of teams in the other five, bringing the total available entries to 112. Mr. Fielding hopes to get to the point where each division is filled early. Council requested Mr. Field- ing complete a Community Grant Philosophy form, which was passed earlier in the day and present it to council. The new forms allow groups to make straight forward requests for grants, knowing beforehand if they meet the criteria for such a grant. Big tourney set for July 12 in Port By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Two successful Canada-USA Challenges have sparked Port Perry Minor Softball to try for a third, as organizers announced they would be holding the event again this summer. The mens National Team from New Zealand will be in town on July 12 for a double header. The first opponent will be the Greenbank Gamblers, while the second opponent is yet tobe named. The following night will see the World Champion ISC teams meet, when a team from Green Bay, Wisconsin will meet the Toronto Gators, who will be making their second appear- ance in Scugog. Dave Kay, special events co- ordinator for Port Perry Minor Softball, asked council for per- mission to block off Water Street both nights from 5p.m. until midnight. Last year's event raised ap- proximately $1,200 and orga- nizers are hoping for more this year. The event attracted about 3,000 people to the ball dia- monds over the course of the two nights. The first Canada-US Chal- lenge saw the Oshawa Hornets and the Sioux City Gateway 2000 Soos meet on the ball dia- monds. Last summer the Soos returned, this time to face the Toronto Gators.
