Meet Georgina Ice MoJacks playoffs to begin on Wednesday The Port Perry MoJacks will begin their playoff drive this week as they meet the Georgina Ice in the opening round for the local team. The Ice, advanced to meet the MoJacks after defeating the Little Britain Merchants in their opening series. The ModJacks will be well rested for the series as the home squad took a bye in the first round of the playoffs. | Game one of the MoJack-Ice series will go Wednesday night (Feb. 15) at Scugog Arena, beginning at 8 p.m. Game two will be in Georgina Friday night and game three back in Port Perry Sunday nightat7 p.m. The Port Perry Country Style Bantams are underway, in their second series, on the road to meet their goal - an All-Ontario Cup. After sweeping Lindsay in the first round, we faced a Stouffville team that we hadn't beaten all year long. We came out flying and wanted to win. That's what will win this series, folks; disci- pline and desire. The line of Scott Heffern, Shane Norton and Adam Hobbs were especial- ly on fire, scoring 14 points between them. Cap- tain Heffern had four assists which were all beautiful passes. Heffern sure has beauty hands. Norton had a hat trick, and added two assists, along with young Hobbsy who was a mirror image to Norton, with three snipes, and two helpers. When asked what came over these guys, they were all quick with a response. Hobbs remarked, "Well, I tell ya...I promised Kristyn a couple of those, and the other, well I thought I'd just add that one for the heck of it." What a sweet guy little Hobbs is. Norton said his goals were "a challenge to myself. have to keep on an edge." Scotty said playing with these two guys is easy. "All you have to do is put it on their stick, and you're almost assured to get your name in the paper." Is he just saying that? Shawn Hnatko scored our other goal, mak- ing the sum seven. TKO knocked in a rebound that was sitting in front of the net. Murphy took the shot, playing forward on this night, ringing the puck off the crossbar, sending it al- most straight down into the crease. The tender didn't have a clue. Froaty also assisted making a fine pass to Murf. Stouffville scored four, but it just wasn't enough for the offensive display we put on. What a bunch of snipers we got here. Excellent. We were missing Derek Tindall for the first game as he was in San Juan, negotiating his contract terms, with the team president. Tin- dall's back now and ready to go, with one heck of a tan. The second game was on Sunday, Feb. 12 in the village. Kent Johnston was looking great in goal early on, kicking out pucks from all angles. We scored two in the first. Both were rebounds that were knocked in from point blank range. Heffern scored the first from Shane Norton, while Norton struck himself, from Morden and Smitty on the power play. Our third goal had a little more planning than the first two. Adam Bantams start second round Hobbs put 'er back to Murphy, who directed it to the net. Heffy and Norton banged at it a bit until Heffern finally banged it under the tender. Hard work around the net pays off boys, way to go. Three to one after two frames, but we let that lead go. Norton scored our fourth, assisted by Tindall, to give us a 4-1 lead with 10:49 to go. Stouffville stormed back and scored five in the last 10 minutes, to our lone goal by Jay Strick- ert. This brought it to 6-5 for the Clippers. Game ovAr. Another lesson. Get ready for Thursday. Colin Laird was on the sidelines with an injured spleen. "It's a lot harder watching your team lose than it is actually playing the game. You feel useless. You feel like nothing for 45 minutes of action." Although Todd and Lee weren't too pleased with the final period, they did manage to squeeze out a couple of comments on the game. "You have to be mentally prepared to win a hockey game. We weren't. I knew the instant I walked into the dressing room that we just wer- en't ready to play. I don't know what it is with this Stouffville team, they just don't give up. We have to get them," said Blades with a monotone. Lee Wilbur was more direct and to the point with the guys. He said "This ain't no freakin' bal- let boys! It's a hockey game!" This week's player profile has been a long time waiting. All year long. Casey Van Schagen. What can I say about this guy? He's a hockey player's hockey player. Super Case is looking solid on the line, as of late, punishing anyone who comes down his side. Casey is one of six team members who celebrated an All-Ontario victory last season with the peewee legion- naires. He's been there before and wants to go back this year. "An All-Ontario Championship is the greatest thing for a young guy to experi- ence. Everything else, you have a lot of chances to grab, but an All-Ontario doesn't come around too often. When it does, you better get on it." Shaggy isn't the biggest guy on the ice, but he makes up for his size with his speed. This guy can fly, folks. Looks like Guy Lafleur breaking in off the wing, hair blowingin the wind. Our next game is at home on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 9:30 p.m. Be there, folks. It'll feature rough and tough hockey. Good ole' time hockey. Eddie Shore, Toe Blake. Just what everyone wants to see. Come on out folks, you'll love it! We'll all be ready for this one. Guaranteed. eliminating Panthers advance after Stouffville There was cause for celebra- tion on Mon. Feb. 6 when the Lakeside Golf and Hockey Cen- tre Midget Panthers defeated their first round contenders from Stouffville by a score of 6- 2. This game ended a best of five series for the Panthers on a pos- itive note. After battling the clippers inorder to advance, the boys left the ice to the cheers of the game. From the solid goal- tending throughout the series to the hustle from each team member and the consistent coaching, it was a hard fought series. Stouffville never let up and at the end of the night when the writing was on the wall and they knew Port Perry would ad- vance, the Clippers showed their sportsmanship by con- gratulating everyone on theice. The first period started off tentatively as both teams knew mistakes could prove costly, but the Panthers drew first blood as Kenton LeFort pounced on a loose puck in front of the Stouff- ville net and flipped it over the Clipper goalie. Jeremy Geer and Craig Laird picked up the assists on the goal. The Pan- thers had lots of scoring chanc- es but Stouffville managed to tie it up late in the first. Those chances the Panthers were get- ting finally turned into goals as they scored two in the last min- ute of the period for a command- ing 3-1 lead. Shane Norton, called up from the Bantam #1 team, gave the Clipper goalie no chance as he picked his spot on a nice set up from Jeremy Geer and Jeff Clarke. With seven sec- onds left in the period, Jay King scored his first of three of the night to cap a great start for the Panthers. Assisting Jay on his goal were Kenton LeFort and Daryl Bourgeois. In the second, it was all Pan- thers as they upped their lead to 4-1, when Jeremy Geer blasted a shot from the point. Setting Jeremy up on this goal were Jay King and Craig Laird. The rest of the night belonged to Jay King as he finished off his hat trick with a goal in the setond assisted by Kenton LeFort and one in the third unassisted. "Way to go Kinger." Stouffville scored their second goal late in the second, but the Panthers shut them down for the rest of the game and maintained a 6-2 win. The last minute of play was exciting as the Panthers were two men short and the Clippers had pulled their goalie. Our ever opportunistic defenceman, Jeff Jamieson intercepted a cross ice pass and took off like a speeding bullet. He crossed cen- tre ice with blazing speed, but failed to negotiate the "speed bump" on the blue line and blew a flat leaving the puck sitting behind him. Way to go Jeff, great hustle buddy. Garry Geer certainly did a great job pinch hitting on the bench for Warren, who was un- fortunately, "otherwise de- tained." It was great to see eve- ryone out on such a cold, frigid night when even the air in the arena had a real bite to it. Thanks to Shawn and Kim Parker, our sponsors from Lakeside Golf and Hockey Cen- tre, for coming our and cheering the Panthers on. Also a special mention to Seth Gray for pro- viding all the musical intervals during the past several games for the Bantams and the Mid- gets. It really adds to the mo- mentum. Also the boys would like to thank Jon Jamieson for bringing along the post game celebration feast. The Panthers now face Co- bourg in a quarter final show- down and started on the road Feb. 12 and came away with a convinving 7-4 win. Details to follow in next week's paper. Their next home game will be game two of the best of five at the Scugog Arena on Friday, Feb. 17at9 p.m.
