2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Tuesday, February 14, 1995 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Trustees cut hike to 3.5%, but hirings will force taxes higher By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Public school trustees in Durham Region have pared a projected budget hike down to 3.5 per cent -- but more costs will be incurred before a final figure is set. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew, chair of the board's budget com- mittee, said trustees shaved more than 2 percentage points -- or $4 million -- off a projected 6.7 per cent budget hike when they met last Thursday night (Feb. 9) by cutting out a number of capital expenditures, includ- ing school renovations. At the same time, trustees were warned there will be a need to hire more educational OFA... ... in the eyes of the consumer ... They will remove a cap on the number of assistants that has been in place for the past three years, said Mrs. Drew. "Since that time, the number of special ed kids has increased, " she said Friday. "This has got to the point where it's very risky; we're spreading these educational assistants pretty thin." Removal of the cap "is going to mean people. And people mean money," said Mrs. Drew. Trustees were able to pare down a budget increase that wus originally forecast at 6.7 per cent by delaying for another year plans for renovations to elementary and secondary schools throughout the region. They also did some juggling with funds: 0 They will draw $932,000 out of reserves to help pay for the board's share of more than $5 million worth of work to be carried out under the federal- provincial infrastructure works program; 0 The remainder of the board's one-third share for the infrastructure work will be dis- bursed over two years, and 0 Junior Kindergarten reserves of $1 million will be used in 1995. The increase publicized by the board going into budget deliberations was originally just over 5 per cent, but that was revised to 6.7 per cent when board officials figured in employee costs such as UIC, CPP, Workers compensation, and insurance increases of around 25 per cent. Public input invited into budget talks Anyone wishing to participate in setting the 1995 budget for Durham Board of Education is invited to do so beginning this Thursday, Feb. 18. Board Trustees have invited parents and members of the community - at large to get involved with budget delibera- tions with both written and oral submissions. Anyone wishing to attend budget discussions can do so au the board office in Whitby. Oral submission can be sent to: Durham Board of Education Centre at 400 Taunton Rd. East, Whitby, LIN 5R5 to the atten- tion of the budget committee. Budget meetings have been set for Feb. 16, 28, March 2 and 23 at 7 p.m. and Feb 18 at 9:30 a.m. & By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star 'Island crash claims life of Ajax woman Miserable road conditions were the result of high winds and blowing snow throughout the area this weekend. Icy road conditions are being blamed for a two-vehicle collision on Scugog Island Friday night that claimed the life of an Ajax woman. Cindy Hogan, 22, of Ajax was killed when her vehicle went out of control and slammed into an oncoming vehicle being driven by a Scugog township man, Durham Regional Police reported. Police said Ms Hogan was northbound on. Island Rd. around 6:50 p.m. Friday (Feb. 10) in a 1991 Geo when she lost control of the car on slippery roads. The Geo slid sideways into the path of a 1995 Isuzu being driven by 55-year-old James Ballingall, police said. Ms Hogan was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Ballingall and a passenger sus- tained minor injuries in the collision. Bad road conditions are also the cause of an accident Saturday morning that resulted in a Durham Regional Police cruiser being totalled and and officer injured. Police said Const. Jim Hunter was on patrol on Hwy. 12 when he spotted a vehicle in the east ditch in the vicinity of Haugen's restaurant in Manchester. The officer stopped to investigate and was in his cruiser when a truck being driven by 77-year-old Hubert Higgs of Millbrook lost . control and slammed into the back of the police car. The protective screen inside the cruiser broke and hit Const. Hunter in the head, leaving him with injuries. The cruiser is a write-off, police said. PH pl Mi "Come Celebrate With Us!
