1 i i i "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" _ PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 21, 1995 - 19 Sr D> PORT PERI STAR ORTS XL Eaglettes win the gold medals at tournament The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes, Novice C Ringette team, trav- elled to Kingston on Feb. 10 to participate in the Kingston Val- entine Ringette Tournament. The first game was on Friday and saw Port. Perry match up against a team from Ennis- more. The Eaglettes' first goal came in the opening minute of play and Port exploded with 12 more goals in the first and sev- enin the second for a 20-1 win. The Eaglettes controlled play throughout the game, complete- ly overpowering Ennismore. Port goals were scored by Whit- ney Reid (three), Heather Imrie (three), Holly Allison (three), Hailey Wilson (two), Jackie Pashley (two), Christine Cotie (two), Amanda Curry (two), with singles going to Nicole An- sell, Jenna Davison and Ceilidh Baxter. Assists went to Chris- tine (two), Jackie (two), Nicole (two), Holly (two), Jenna (two), Ceilidh (two), Amanda, Heath- er and Brooke Simpson. Jill Hunter played very well in net and was supported by strong de- fensive and offensive plays made by Sarah Aldridge, Shan- non Urquhart and Jessica Doe. Port hosted Ajax for the sec-- ond game of the tounament in a game that Ajax dominated for the entire first period. With Ajax leading 4-0 early in the second period, the Eaglettes seemed to wake up and scored eight unanswered goals to win 8-4. Goals for the IEaglettes were scored by Jackie (six) and Christine (two). Assists were made by Brooke and Hailey. Heather played goal in this game and really kept the team in the hunt by holding Ajax to only four goals while she waited for the team to get on track. Al- though not shown in the scoring summary, the rest of the team played quite well in setting up the scoring plays and keeping Ajax away from the net as much as possible. The close checking and enthusiasm shown by Sa- rah, Jessica, Ceilidh, Whitney, Jill, Amanda, Nicole, Holly, Shannon U. and Jenna was very important to the win. Port's third game of the tour- nament was against the King- ston team. This was a very close game with Kingston opening the scoring late in the first peri- od. The Eaglettes managed to tie it up a minute later ending the first period tied at one goal apiece. From then on the lead see- sawed back and forth with Port Perry leading by a goal and less than four minutes left on the clock. Kingston then scored with only 27 seconds left and 'the gime ended in a 4-4 tie. The Port goals were scored by Jackie (two), Nicole and Whitney. As- sists were made by Jackie and Whitney. Jill played very well in goal and was supported by the strong defence and good Turnto Page 20 Malmont Atoms tourney On Feb. 18, the Malmont Farms Atoms hosted their an- nual tournament. Teams from Newmarket, Bradford, East Gwillimbury, Oak Ridges, Ux- bridge and Oshawa came along to strut their stuff. The Malmonts won this tour- nament in dramatic fashion last year but the outcome for this year's team was destined to be different. In the opener, the Malmonts lost to the Oshawa Red Wings 4-3 in overtime. Port had built up a 3-0 lead by mid- way through the second period, but at that point, the Wings seemed to want to win badly and they fought back gamely to tie the score. With just 16 sec- onds gone in the overtime, they took advantage of a faceoff in the Malmont zone to score the winner. Goals for Port were by Trevor Lance (on a backhander), by a hustling Dean Van Camp on a breakaway while his team was successfully killing off a two- man penalty, and by Jamie Smith on a second chance shot from the slot. D'Arcy Stephens made a good poke check save in the first period and then three consecutive saves on an Oshawa power play in the sec- ond. Oshawa markers in regula- tion time came on another pow- er play, a giveaway and a break- away earlier in the third period. Goalie Mike Koury made a action couple of nice saves when the Malmonts were shorthanded yet again late in the third peri- od. The Malmont team ended their tournament action by an- other overtime loss 4-3 to East Gwillimbury. An energetic East Gwillimbury team capitalized on a wraparound goal in over- time to relegate the "green ma- chine" to observer status. The visitors took a 1-0 lead as they scored on a first period breakaway. They controlled most of the play from that point on including killing off a two- man second period Port power play. The "greens" finally broke through as Dean set up Adam Moynes wrist shot goal on a two-on-one break. Just 20 sec- onds later, big Mark Duncan de- posited a puck into the top cor- ner after the puck was kept in the offensive zone on the initia- tive of veteran Dane Gray. Momentum shifted further to our team as Trevor Weisflock had a chance at an open net af- ter Scott Duncan had made a good "keep in" at the offensive blue line. A short burst of effec- tive passing occurred when Jeff Tarbotton passed back to Tyler Houthuys at the point. He, in turn, made a cross-ice blue line pass to Dane who got a low hard drive at the East Gwillimbury net. Turnto Page 22 ModJacks up two games . The good news is that after a 6-5 win on Sunday night they led the Georgina Ice two games to one going into their fourth game in Sutton last night. The bad news is that they've had to do it without some players while other MoJacks are play- ing hurt. After fielding a full lineup in the series opener last Wednes- day, a 4-2 win for Port Perry, the ModJacks lost 5-2 in Sutton Friday. Ryan Ridgeway broke his collarbone Saturday in a to-- bogganing accident and it ends his season. Steve Laird was also not available for action Sunday. Todd Stirling injured his leg Sunday while several members of the team are playing with the flu. School will limit the availa- bility of players such as Jason Cochrane who attends universi- ty in Guelph and Todd Dennis who currently has a school placement with the Durham Regional Police. Dennis and Cochrane were able to play Sunday but are questionable for this week's games. Dennis played a big part in Sunday's win with two goals and two assists while Cochrane added a goal and an assist. And every goal was crucial for the ModJacks to take the lead in the series. Port Perry led 1-0 after the first period when Dennis scored his first goal on a power play. But the second period started off tough for the ModJacks when penalties finally caught up with them. Georgina took advantage of three consecutive power plays to jump outin front 3-1. The sec- ond goal was a real heartbreak- er too. Port Perry was called for three separate two-minute mi- nors, giving the Ice a two-man advantage for two minutes, fol- lowed by a one-man advantage for another two minutes. The ModJacks killed the two-man ad- vantage, but it only took the Ice three seconds to score on the fol- lowing penalty. The power-play goals didn't stop there though. Port Perry took advantage of their own opower plays with Cochrane scoring on a pass from Paul Kel- ly and Dennis, burying it be- hind Ice goaltender John Zei- ger. Then it was Dennis, again taking advantage of a power play, tying the score at 3-3. He took a pass from Cochrane this time before finding the back of the net. The third period offered the same story to start, with-Keith Leslie scoring the last of the power-play goals. Dennis earned his second assist on the goal and Scott Heasman also figured into the goal. It took Darryl Bricknell, a late season MoJacks pickup, to score the first even-strength goal of the game and give Port Perry a 5-3 edge. That lead might have held up any other time of the year, but the playoffs are different and Georgina showed that they don't give up easily. They scored with six minutes remaining to make it 5-4 and then tied it up with just over three minutes left in the game, making it 5-5. The large crowd on hand for the game held quite a few Georgina supporters. With each goal by the opposi- tion, chants of "Ice", "Ice", "Ice", grew louder. But it took Trevor Bremnor to finally get the Port Perry fans fired up. The chants of "Port", "Port", "Port" came to life when Bremnor scored what turned out to be the winning goal with 1:58 left in the game. 3 His goal from just below the right faceoff circle, in the Ice zone, slipped under a surprised Zeiger and finished off Georgi- na's bid for a road win. After scoring the goal, Bremnor skat- ed through centre ice waving 'his arms and encouraging the crowd to cheer for the home team. He had gone after the puck hoping to find someone in front of the net, but ended up shoot- ing. "I tried to go to the far side (of the net) on him, but it went right between his legs," Brem- nor said. Going back to Sutton he thinks the small rink will force the team to change their game plan after losing on Fri- day. "In their barn, we'll have to dump and chase," Bremnor says. "We'll have to buckle down and start doing that." Dennis had an impressive game with his production and getting some rest before the game was a big lift for him.
