4- PORT PERRY STAR - 'Tuesday, February 21, 1995 CEE "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" With the death of Yvonne Christie, the seat of Regional Councillor for Scugog Town- ship is now vacant and a new representative will be ap- pointed, according to town- ship mayor Howard Hall. The procedure under cir- cumstances such as thedeath of a councillor are laid out in the Municipal Act and the Durham Region Act, the mayor said. "It is an appointment made by this council, it is not an election," Mayor Hall stressed. The township will be ad- vertising for a replacement for the regional seat and any resident meeting the criteria can put their name forward. If a number of people apply for the position, a decision would then be made, Mayor Hall said. Another possibility is that council could appoint from within. Ifa current councillor decides to apply for the re- gional seat, they do not have to resign their own seat prior to the appointment, it would be done after. If a current councillor was to be appointed to the region- al seat, the ward seat could then be filled either by ap- pointment or by election, but Mayor Hall believes council would choose an election in this case. With more than two years left in the term he said coun- cil would likley choose to run an election for any ward seat. When Councillor Christie first became sick and was forced to be away from her po- litical duties, council could hold the seat for three months. With her death the seat now has tobe filled. You usually knew where you stood with her. Once she got an idea into her head that was it. There was no changing it, But, at least you knew where she was coming from on pretty much every issue," the mayor said. "She was a good representa- tive for the people," he added. "She was a very hard-nosed person, who worked hard forev- er," he said. When political life wasn't taking up her time, Mrs. Christie was very involved with the Central Seven Community Living Association, of which she was a charter member who helped to get the organization off the ground. She also worked hard for the Legion, and had a soft spot for the museum and Historical Society. "She felt the museum was a very important part of the com- munity," Mrs. Kendall said. "If you ever wanted some- thing done in Port Perry, you would go to the busiest person you knew and Yvonne would be there, whether it was serving at Legion dinners, judging the mutt show or handing out eggs at the Easter Egg Hunt. She just loved this community. She loved doing for the community and I hope they will remember that," she added.
