At far back are coaches Ted Howarth and Rick Lukas. ; Big V finish as finalists Port Perry hosted its Peewee House League Tournament on Wednesday and saw one of its own entries go on to the champi- onship e. , Big V started off the day with a match against a determined Newcastle squad. Rodney Bond put the home team on the board first after a nice setup from Bil- "ly Carr and Matt Cracknell. e Newcastle team tied the score early in the second but Matt McGarry's blast 21 sec- onds later (assisted by Tim Wray) restored Big V's lead. The visitors tied the game late in the second and scored the go-ahead marker early in the third. Our boys were not about to give up as determined efforts by Matt Cracknell and Tim Wray resulted in Matt McGarry's second marker of the game to knot the score at 3-3. - The game was tied at the end of regulation time so a five- minute sudden death overtime was to be played with each .squad losing a player at one minute intervals. The overtime period provided heartstopping end-to-end ac- tion with Big V netminder Ken Lukas dazzling the fans with some great saves. It came down to the final minute with one skater per team. The Newcastle player came in on a partial breakaway with Tim Wray in hot pursuit. A divine poke check by Lukas sent Wray down the ice on his own breakaway and he made no mistake as he ripped a shot past the Newcas- tle goalkeeper to win the game for BigV. The second game for our boys was against a squad from Ajax and would prove to be as much of a heartstopper as game one. Big V hit the board first with Clayton Dales bulging the twine after Billy Carr's nice set- up pass. Even though Manvers had the momentum, the Eaglettes had the lead and were able to fend off their determined oppo- nents. The Port team continued to play well and relied upon their vastly improved playing skills to score twice more, while holding Manvers to only one more goal, and win the game 8- 6. Sarah Aldridge played ex- tremely well in net despite this being her first time at that posi- tion. The Eaglettes' goals were scored by Jackie (six) and Ni- cole (two). Some great passing was very important in setting up these goals, however, no as- sists were recorded on the game sheet. Playing their best game yet and helping out enormously on offense by making some great passes and on defense by ag- gressively checking Manvers were Ceilidh Baxter, Holly, Shannon U., Jenna, Brooke, Jessica, Hailey and Whitney. This win gave Port Perry and Manvers identical records of 7- 1-1. Since the first meeting of these two teams ended in a tie and the Eaglettes won this sec- ond game, Port ended up in first place. This gave the Eaglettes home ice advantage for the playoffs. The first game of the playoffs occurred last Sunday with first place Port Perry playing fourth place Markham. The Eaglettes started strong and kept the pressure on Markham through- out the game. Leading 8-1 after the first pe- riod, Port was well on their way to a win. After both teams ex- changed goals in the second pe- riod, the Eaglettes ended up winning the game 9-2 and the right to play next weekend in the league championship game. Jill Hunter played a solid game between the pipes and was supported by the great de- fense and checking of Ceilidh, Holly, Amanda, Jessica, Shan- non U., Shannon H., Jenna and Sarah. Goals for Port were scored by Jackie (five), Hailey, Christine, Brooke, and Nicole. Assists were made by Heather (three), Brooke (two), Nicole, Jackie and Whitney. Before the first period could end, both squads exchanged goals seven seconds apart; first Ajax scored then Chris Medford set up Matt Cracknell who blasted a shot into the top cor- ner to restore Big V's lead. Three minutes into the second period, Ajax beat Big V's Ken ukas for the last time in the e as he shut them down right into the overtime period. The overtime was almost a carbon copy of the first game with end-to-end nailbiting ac- tion. Each squad was down to two skaters when Billy Carr's third assist of the game sent Matt Cracknell into the clear. Cracknell buried his shot to win - the match for Big V and his en- tire game effort resulted in his selection as team MVP. Big V now found themselves in the championship game against a big Newmarket club who had beaten their previous two opponents by scores of 7-0 and 6-2. Newmarket struck first three minutes into the first period and then increased the margin to 2-0 halfway through the second. Our boys kept pressing and were finally rewarded when Matt Vaughan and Matt Crack- nell combined to set up Billy Carr to cut Newmarket's lead in half. The goaltenders for both squads kept the sharpshooters at bay until the six minute mark of the third when New- market fired a blast past Ken Lukas to go ahead 3-1. Big V kept the pressure on but Newmarket iced the game with less than a minute remain- ing to win the championship. Big V ended up in second place for the day in a well-played, dis- ciplined effort. Great work, guys and good luck in the playoffs! TS a Overhead Doors 'exit the playoffs On March 12, our Peewee B 8 squad hosted Grimsby in their semi-final series. Our boys' backs were against the wall as we faced elimination. The team played gamely and were on even terms with the vis- itors in the first period. Kam Cooper had a good chance off a faceoff and Ryan Fraser was fending off the chances against him in our net. At 13:23 our ef- forts were rewarded as Chris Jones broke out of his zone with a pass to forwards Matt Mac- Master and Scott Brownson. Joel Phoenix then finished off the play to give the Port team their first lead of the series. With the team on a high, every- one tried even harder. Joel Van Camp dished out a solid bodycheck and Scott Cun- ningham nearly scored. Unfor- tunately, at 7:64 Grimsby tied the score. A three-on-one rush by Russ Brown, John Bacon and Joel Van Camp ensued a little later but didn't meet with suc- cess. A later period turnover gave Grimsby another goal and a lead they wouldn't relinquish on their way to a 4-1 win. This, . unfortunately, ended the Peewee's playoff hopes and Grimsby get full marks for their strong game and series perfor- mance. Port Perry wishes Grimsby good luck in their OMHA Divisional Final. The Larocque Electric Pee- wee House League team par- ticipated in the annual house league invitational tourna- ment on March 15. Larocque defeated Lindsay in the opening game 3-2 but lost their second and final game go Newmarket by a score of 6- In the first game, La- rocque fell behind two goals, but John Barton played an outstanding game in goal to keep Larocque in contention. The Electrical gang turned on the power to score three consecutive goals. John Sanders opened the scoring in the second period at 9:07 from Nick Ostafichuk and Jeff Harrison. Larocque turned the momentum of the game around as Jamie Page scored at 5:08 on a pretty two-way pass from Ken Ellis and Nick Ostafichuk. The winning goal was scored at 2:10 of the second period by Mark Delaney. Ken Ellis: won the faceoff draw and De- laney found the corner on a low slapshot from the blue line. The third period saw John Barton making key saves as Mike Dalby and Rob Taylor came close for Larocque. Later in the third period, Jamie Page and Rob Traylor used determination and Cam Vernest who poked in his own rebound. This was a rough-and- tumble game in which both. teams refused to give up any ground Larocque's alie ohn Barton again stood tall, stopping over 30 shots in this game. g Larocque's next contest will be this Saturday against Big V in the final round- robin tournament. The championship game will be played April 1. Legionnaires drop out Saturday, March 11 found the Legionnaires facing their toughest game of the year, when Collingwood came to play the fifth and deciding game to determine which team would carry on to the All-Ontario Championships. With the series tied at two games apiece and all four games being won by only a one- al difference, players from Both teams knew this was going to be a tough one. Collingwood was on the score- board first, and they never looked back despite the efforts of each and every one of our Le- gionnaires. Collingwood head- ed home with the win. The Legionnaires had an ex- cellent season winning a total of 34 games this year. Each player added a number of trophies to their collection winning the - championship in four out of six tournaments ghey participated in. Good luck to the players ad- vancing on to Bantam next year and also to the players becom- ing major Peewees.
