Major Ringette team ended their season over the April 1-2 weekend by capturing a gold medal in the Regional Champion- ships held in Whitby. The team had a very successful tournament starting on Friday, March 31 against a team from Whitby. This game was very exciting with the momentum swinging back and forth many times. Whitby 2 scored first with Port notching the tying goal nearing the end of the first period. Port then scored a go-ahead goal about a minute later with Whitby 2 tying it up to end the first period. Whitby 2 opened the scoring in the second period with the Eaglettes an- swering with five more goals putting the game out of reach. Whitby 2 scored one more time to make the final score 7- 4 for Port Perry. Goals for the Eaglettes were scored by Jackie Pashley (four), Christine Cotie (two), and Nicole Ansell. Assists went to Holly Allison (four), and Hailey Wilson. A tremendous effort was given in goal sive and offensive plays were made by Whitney Reid, Amanda Curry, Shan- non Hatfield, Brooke Simpson, Jessica Doe, Shannon Urquhart, Ceilidh Bax- ter, Jill Hunter, Sarah Aldridge and Jenna Davison. The next game pitted Port Perry ainst Manvers. Manvers found the in- itiative in this game and scored twice before Port was able to notch two of theirown. Manvers regained their lead by scor- ing twice more and the Eaglettes fought back to tie the game 4-4 at the end of the first period. The second period was all Manvers who scored five times to win the game 9- 4. Port Perry played well in this game but the team was not able to take advan- tage of the few scoring opportunities given to them. Highlights for the Eaglettes were the great goaltending effort by Heather Im- rie; the goals scored by Jackie (three) and Christine; and the assists made by Jessica and Nicole. A good effort was put out by Ceilidh, Amanda, Shannon U., Jill, Brooke, Hai- ley, Whitney, Shannon H., Sarah, Holly and Jenna. On Saturday morning the Eaglettes played the final game of the round robin format against Ajax. This game was also quite exciting with Ajax controlling the first period and ending it leading 5- by Heather Imrie and very strong defen- . Goals for the Eaglettes were scored by Jackie (four), Christine (three), and Nicole (two). Assists were made by Nicole (two), Jackie, Ceilidh, Amanda, Brooke and Whitney. Jill pro- vided Port with a very good goaltending performance and contributed greatly to the win. The ability of the team to rebound in the second period is a direct result of the checking and hustle shown by Hailey, Sarah, Heather, Jessica, Shannon U., Jenna and Holly leaving very few op- portunities for Ajax to score. Later that day, Whitby 2 met Man- vers and scored an upset win thereby setting up the gold medal game be- tween Port Perry and Whitby 2 on the Sunday. The game on Sunday was a great spectacle for the fans and worthy of achampionship final. The Eaglettes took an early lead with Whitby 2 tying it up shortly after. Whit- by then took the lead and it was Port's turn to tie it up. The Eaglettes again took the lead and Whitby again tied it. Once more Port took the lead and Whitby tied it up. The Eaglettes scored again as the buzzer sounded to end the first period with Port holding a 5-4 lead. Whitby came out strong in the second period scoring twice to tie the game and take the lead away from Port. The Ea- glettes fought back to tie the game again and shortly after Whitby scored once more to regain their lead. Once again Port struggled back and tied the game. The Eaglettes kept up the pressure and were able to find the net once more to score the game winner with 3:34 left to play. The remaining time on the clock seemed to be the longest 3:34 ever played as Port fended off numerous at- tacks by Whitby to eventually win 8-7. Goals in this game were scored for Port by Jackie (seven) and Christine. Assists were made by Hailey (two), Christine, Nicole, Shannon H. and Whitney. Heather was back in goal for this game and gave the team an exceptional performance by stopping Whitby's sharpshooters extremely well. Without the checking and hustle shown by Sa- rah, Jessica, Holly, Ceilidh, Shannon U., Jenna, Brooke, Amanda and Jill, however, the result of the game would not have been the same.
