Tory chief talking tough By David Stell Port Perry Star Mike Harris continues to pitch his three- year plan to cut $4 billion in taxes in Ontario, claiming it will equal out to a $2,000 savings for the average family and bring back a con- sumer confidence that 1s missing today. That's what the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party told a group of supporters and media gathered in Bowmanville last Friday afternoon (April 7). He was in Bowmanville to support Durham East Progressive Conservative representative John O'Toole. Mr. Harris used the opportunity to describe in detail the Tory plan to rebuild Ontario, called the Common Sense Revolution. The plan outlines the steps a Tory govern- ment will implement to stimulate growth including job creation in the private sector. Mr. Harris also says the tax burden in Ontario is stifling growth, and one of the biggest problems he sees in government today is that there are too many public sector jobs. "The number of private sector jobs versus public sector jobs is out of balance," he said. "And this has led to the large deficit we have." "But who wants to take someone that has a public sector job and put him on welfare?" he said. "We must have more private sector jobs." Premier Rae, speaking at a nomination meetin for Durham East MPP Gord Mills, said he'll deal in straight talk and examination of the issues when he takes his case to the province's voters this spring. Police say Diana 35-year-old mother of two, died last Thursday morning (April 6) from injuries sustained in ~ an-accident north of Zephyr March 14. She was jogging on the shoulder of Regional Rd. 39 around 3:30 p.m. when she was struck from behind by a car which had swerved over the center line of the road, police reported.
