He said he'll run on a record of service and integrity. g "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Incumbent seeks reelection No competition as Mills takes NDP nomination By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Gord Mills had just two words to offer in reply when asked last week if he'd 'accept a nomination to carry the NDP colors once more in this spring's provin- cial election. "You bet." Mr. Mills, 67, was unopposed when about 150 party members gathered at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville last Wednesday night (April 5) to nomi- nate a candidate. He will seek a second term in office when voters go to the polls, likely late in May or early in June. Mr. Mills said he'll rely on his record as he attempts to woo voters in the face of what's expected to be a strong chal- lenge by Liberal and Progressive conser- vatives in Durham East. "Premier Bob Rae has yet to announce the date of the vote. "When that time comes you can expect me to defend my record and the record «of our government with a great deal of vigor and a great deal of passion," said Mr. Mills. He said that during the past four and a half years, he has been contacted by hundreds of constituent looking for help. Premier Rae called Mr. Mills a "deter- mined son of a gun" who has pushed tirelessly for his constituency. "Gord has provided just extraordinary constituency representation," said the Premier. He was also lauded by David Hume president of Oshawa General Hospital, who called him "a tremendous supporter of health care in this area." And party stalwart Roy Grierson of Port Perry called Mr. Mills "the hardest- working MPP this riding has ever had." Mr. Mills, a former municipal politi- cian, said he's planning to run a suc- cessful campaign in this year's election. "I have never been beaten in any elec- tion to date, and I don't anticipate defeat in the next provincial election," he said. Mr. Mills said a continuation of the NDP mandate will keep Ontario from a swing to the right that he claims is dic- fuser in both the Liberal and Tory plat- orms. "If we lose this election there's no doubt about it: The right will be in the centre seat here." - i rT Nn Ed i cia pn nr gi be Desr yee naam i 1 oo A
