Resident Tom White, who admits he went to the scene after firefighters arrived, claims the Caesarea squad could have done more to aide the woman. I would expect them to at least go and do something to get her out." Actin fire chief Richard Miller is out of town on vacation, but Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gadsden, chair of the township's fire commit- tee, said reports filed by firefighters after the fatal blaze indicate that an attempt to save the woman was made, before many spectators arrived sat the scene of the fire, which was responded to around 8:30 on a Saturday night. "...as soon as they got there, two of them attempted a rescue right away," said Councillor Gadsden. The two tried to enter a door of the bungalow that faces Regional Rd. 57, but were able to open it only part-way because Mrs. Boehm had collapsed behind it and was block- ing the way. One firefighter man- aged to squeeze through and got to the woman, said the councillor: "She was, in his opinion, expired at that time. "He was struggling with her and the other firefighter noticed the flames were over his head, and the heat was very intense. "And he told him to get out of there." Several people were upset enough to write a letter outlining their com- plaints and sent it to The Star. They were invited to a Wednesday night (April 5) at the home of Pat Halverson, a close friend of Mrs. Boehm's. The meeting was attended by Mr. White and others who had stated their concern about the fire department's perfor- mance, as well as Councillor.Gadsden and Ward 4 representative Joyce Kelly. Councillor Gadsden read from firefighters reports which described in detail the rescue effort made by the two firefight- ers. The accounts of the fire and the efforts of the Caesarea squad impressed Mrs. Halverson. "As it turns out I believe the fire depart- ment did everything with- in their boundaries," she said. "I believe now they did everything within reason to save Sigrid." Mr. White, however, was unswayed by the case presented by the fire department. "I still feel the same way because that meeting was all one-sided," he said. Mr. Marcellus said Mrs. Boehm's death could likely have been prevent- ed if she had had smoke detectors in her house. . . The fire, which he attributed to careless smoking, began in a livin room sofa and bid. along wood-paneled walls to the kitchen at the back of the house, where it ignited with fury, he said. Smoke from the fire would have been heavy, and was what led to Mrs. Boehm's death.
