The municipality enlisted the Region's Works Department to perform a trans- portation impact study on the Island Road. The study has been ongoing since last year. It is not known who will pay for the road improvements, estimated to cost $155,000, as it is not binding on the First Nation, according to Regional « Councillor Marilyn Pearce. The study was conducted at the municipality's request to find out exactly what the prob- lems were on the Island Road, which in recent years has been the site of many traffic acci- dents, including several fatal crashes. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gadsden called Regional Road 7 a "very unforgiving road." "You make a mistake on that road and you pay for it with your life," Councillor Pearce added. Several areas were studied in the report, including the intersection of Highway 7A and the Island Road. The department's findings were that the traffic generated by the new facility, combined with the existing conditions, will lead to high congestion, especially for eastbound and southbound vehicles making right hand turns. The Region is suggesting geometric improvements which will cost $60,000. The changes would include a southbound turn lane. Scugog voters will go to the polls June 8 to pass judgement on the New Democratic gov- ernment that has ruled with a majority since its surprise win in the1990 general election, and local candidates are chomping at the bit to hit the campaign trail. Incumbent Gord Mills (NDP) faces challenges from Liberal candidate Mary Novak and Progressive Conservative John O'Toole, both of whom are municipal councillors in Clarington. Mr. Mills said in an inter- view with The Star last week he'll be running on his record, and calling upon local voters to consider the leadership qual- ities of Premier Bob Rae. He predicts that leadership, preservation of services like health care, and fiscal respon- sibility will be most prevalent in voters' minds as they ponder their decisions in the spring" election. "I see the whole election pro- cess as being one of leadership, and who you want running Ontario during difficult times ahead," he says in a profile in today's Star. His opponents, meanwhile, will be working at hammering home messages espoused by their respective party leaders. Mrs. Novak said her focus will be fiscal responsibility, and the need for a balanced budget as Ontario strives to regain its footing after a dev- astating recession.
