Lisa Kim, Alison Malcolm and Robin Adderley were all given the chance to meet young people from across Canada in a one-week forum and they say it was an incredible experience. The Encounter with Canada Citizenship Canad: . Staff and students will attend the ceremony, where 80 new citizens will take the oath of Canadian citizenship "at the 10 a.m. court, said the department. Ch Forum was held in the Terry Fox Center in Ottawa from April 16-22. A total of 138 stu- dents from each province and the Yukon gathered to learn from each other. "The biggest thing was for us to get together and learn moye about how they do things in other provinces," Lisa says. "We learned about current affairs, and where Canada fits into the world." For Alison, the biggest thrill was sitting in the Speaker's chair and the Prime Minister's desk in the House of Commons. She said it gave her an idea of what she'd like to do with her future. She made several friends from across the country, and was disappointed when it came time to go. "I became really good friends with some people," Alison said. "I wish we'd stayed there for another week." | "We were just becoming com- fortable with each other and then we had to leave." The students were split up into groups of 13 for workshops. They worked together on dif- ferent Canadian and world issues in order to learn about each other's opinions. Cancer Society recognition Hard-working volunteers honored By David Stell Port Perry Star Members of the Scugog Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society were recognized for their long standing support last week. The volunteer organization celebrated vol- unteer week at Doris Taylor's home Wednesday afternoon (April 26). Carole Climenhaga, unit coordinator for the East Durhari Cancer Society was on hand to award certificates of service to most members of the Scugog branch. She praised them all for their efforts over the year and encouraged everyone to keep up the excellent work. Notable achievements for the local volun- teers included five members reaching the 30 year plateau and one member reaching 20 years of volunteering. Mabel Cawker, Tot Holtby, Joan Christie, Myrtle Prentice and Joan Graham have all volunteered for more than 30 years now and Helen O'Reilly has offered 20 years of support to the cause. Most members of the Scugog branch and volunteer drivers received certificates. The majority have volunteered with the society between five and fifteen years now and every- one received pins representing their years of volunteering with the society. Mrs. Taylor noted that drivers who provide an invaluable service to cancer patients are always needed. Those interested can contact Eileen Hodgins at 985-2487.
