ho "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Fight to save AES office on By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The fight to save Scugog's Agricultural Employment Services office will continue, its manager says. Rolly Coy said Friday that negotiations at local and national levels are planned to continue providing a link between job-seekers and the farming industry. And he's started a petition which calls upon those upset by the Port Perry office's pending closure to put pressure on Durham MP Alex Shepherd. "The bottom line.is it's up to the community," Mr. Coy said. If they want some form of this service, they have to provide the support. "If they don't they're going to lose it." = Mr. Coy learned a couple of weeks ago that his office, which provides an organized labor pool for local farmers, and also links job seekers in Scugog with Canada Employment Centre resources in Oshawa, -- ; was being handed a 35 per cent budget cut by the fed- eral government, and closed in March next year. Sub offices in Cannington and Peterborough have already been closed, and the Port Perry office will sur- vive the current fiscal year, said Mr. Coy. He said he is working on contacts locally in an effort to provide the service after the feds pull the plug next year; and lobbying is being done nationally Committee, comprised of a number of primary agri- culture agencies. Co A meeting with members of the Liberal party's eastern caucus April 24 produced some murmurs of support among the politicians, but burgauycrats from Human Resources Minister Lloyd AxWworthy's office are unswayed by arguments, said Mr. Coy. He's hoping local politicians, farmers, and those who've sought employment through the local office by the Ontario Agricultural Human Resources bcs will put pressure on Durham MP Shepherd to reverse his endorsement of the budget cuts.Mr, Shepherd said in a statement soon after the funding announcement was made that the govern t can't provide year- round funding for what he claimed are essentially seasonal employment centres. oo "It's unusual for a local MP to take that sort of stand for this kind of operation, which is helping people find employment," said Mr. Coy. "There has been no consideration at all by either our local MP or the system to try and come through with efficiencies. "There's all kinds of options for greater efficiency, as far as I'm concerned." Mr. Shepherd contends that the government is looking ahead in exploring options for the provision of services now under the AES mandate by existing Canada Employment Centres, such as the one in Oshawa. The government has pledged that in some form, "the services will continue," he said in an interview Friday. But,"The reality is a fixed office and a fixed, annu- alized staff is not in the cards." The MP said the cuts were necessitated by finance Minister Paul Martin's tough budget, which responded to Canadians' calls for less spending and an end to tax hikes. ~ PETITIONING THE FEDS: Rolly Coy, manager at the Agricultural Employment Services office in Port'Perry, displays the petition he's gathering in hopes of convincing the federal government not to eliminate the services his Sfice provjdés.
