"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 1995 -21 W.I. TURNS 60: There was a luncheon celebration Thursday at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry to mark the 60th anniversary of the Honeydale WI, estab- lished in 1935. On hand were W.I. president Elsie Pogue (left) District President Mary Cannon, and past president and charter member Clara Warren. After 60 years of com- panionship and good works for the community, Honeydale Women's strong. Members and guests gathered Thursday (May 4) for a luncheon to cele- brate the Institute's 60th anniversary, and look to the future. A history of the club shows that one man's mis- fortune resulted in the foundation of a club that would focus on fellowship, fun and good works for the next six decades. The history, written by a charter member, notes that in the early spring of 1935 Jack Barns, who worked for Harold Honey, met with an accident in the woods and broke his leg, and had to be hospitalized. The women of the district thought it would be a nice work to try and aid him financially, and seized upon the notion of making a quilt, and selling tickets to raffle it off. A commit- tee of three women -- Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Raines -- was formed to see the project through to completion. A number of women helped in piecing the quilt together, and on March 13, 1935, the quilt was completed. A silver tea was held to mark the event. The quilt was later f displayed and tickets went on sale: $43 was TT --gysed, and handed over ' to an appreciative Mr. Barns. As the quilting pro- gressed, the women talked about forming a Women's Institute. The District WI president, a Mrs. Roberts, as well as Institute is still going a Miss McLelland of Whitby, were invited to a local woman's home ¢n May 8, 1935. It was then that the Honeydale W.I. came into being. Mrs. Edwards was elected the first presi- dent, and Mrs. Russell Willan the first secretary treasurer. Honeydale W.I. hits 60 Meetings were held at women's homes for the next several years, and events included euchre parties and the making of more quilts to raisd funds. Meetings eventu- ally moved to the Parish Hall, and later to the local municipal building. And 60 years later, the group is still going strong.
