"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 1995 -25 SProrTs < Prince Philip Games in Port Perry Opening day Lito S SILL Ie) Teams from 10 Central Ontario Re- gion pony clubs will compete at the first Prince Philip Games meets of the 1995 season, to be held at the Port Perry Fair- grounds and at Canterdown near Belle- ville, both on Sunday, May 14 at 10 a.m. The Port Perry meet is hosted by the Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club and the Canterdown meet by the Napanee Club. Again this season, interest in Prince Philips Games has grown to the point that the region has organized separate meets for teams in the eastern and west- ern halves. The Western Division meet will feature teams from the Simcoe, Te- miskaming, Toronto and North York, Tynedale and Uxbridge-Scugog branch- es, while the Baltimore Hills, Durham, Napanee, Prince Edward County and Victoria branches will send teams to the Eastern Division meet. The Prince Philip Cup Games are a team competition played by Pony Clubs around the world. The games are played by teams of five riders and five points, four of whom participate in each game. Ifone clubis short a player or has one ex- tra, mixed teams are formed with mem- bers from different clubs. All of the games are variations on the relay race, and all are great fun for players and spectators alike. There are three official levels of competition: C for beginners, B for more experienced riders, and A for the top players. There is also unofficial competition at the Masters level, for players over 14 years old. Points accumulate through the sea- son, with the Eastern and Western Divi- sions meeting at the Regional Champi- onships on Aug. 7, and Regional A and B champions going on to play for the East- ern Canadian Championship at the C.N.E. The two top A teams at the C.N.E. advance to the National Champi- onship which will be held in Alberta this year. Individual A level competitors have a chance to try out for the 1995 Ca- nadian team, and compete against other countries to be World Champions. ' " Pony Club is an international organi- zation to promote riding and horseman- ~ ship skills among young people (up to 21 years old). It has been established in Canada since 1934 and counts many of Canada's international riders among its alumni. The Central Ontario Region comprises 35 different branches with a total membership of nearly 700. The Port Perry Fairgrounds are on Re- gional Road 8 at the north end of Port Perry. Canterdown is approximately seven miles north of Highway 401 on Highway 37. Spectators are welcome at both meets without charge. Port Perry High School will be the place to be on May 13 and May 14 for the Annual Port Perry High School Sprin Craft Show. 8 bang If you are looking for that special Mother's Day gift, this is the show that you can't afford to miss. There will be something of inter- est for everyone. The event is being sponsored and or- ganized by the Athletic Association and proceeds are used to fund the athletic programs. The show runs May 13 and May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. Admission is just $2 and sandwiches and home baking will be available. Port Perry High School is located at 160 Rosa Street in Port Perry. There is plenty of free parking so come to Port Perry and follow the signs to the show.
