4 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Hopes to provoke debate y Irreverent Port sculptor takes shot at politicians By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Tyler Briley's at it again. The man who -- this year alone -- has brought Scugog a controversial ice sculp- ture calling for NO NEW TAXES and a write-in campaign that saw taxpayers expressing their dissatisfaction with fed- eral Finance Minister Paul Martin has tongues in his neighborhood wagging again. ie The reason is a chicken-wire and spray-paint sculpture on the front lawn of his Poplar Park home, depicting the people who are trying to win your vote and become the next Premier of Ontario. They sit on a green park bench, with placards on their chests that will report their weekly standings in the opinion polls; Mr. Briley calls that the "Premier Meter". They. are spray-painted bright colors -- NDP orange, Liberal red, and Tory Blue. Representing the traditional Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil figures, their hands are placed where their mouths would be, had they any mouths; they have no heads, see. And they're filled with garbage; but "I think people have pretty much given up on politics," said Mr. Briley, sitting on his porch on a sunny afternoon - last week. "They all seem to be singing the same tune: Who the hell can you trust?" The figures have no heads, he said, because none of the main parties leaders -- Bob Rae of the NDP, Lyn McLeod of the Liberals and Tory chief "Mike Harris -- have demonstrated the ability to be head of a provincial govern- ment, he said. And they're filled with refuse -- all of "it recyclable -- to represent the policies they've been putting forth. "The recycled items represent the ideas they're throwing around," said Mr. Briley. "I just haven't heard anything new. : "I was thinking about leaving Bob Rae empty, but then I thought: Nah, he's come up with a few things lately, I ess. He said he hopes the display will get people thinking about Ontario politics as the election nears and, ideally, talking with their friends and neighbors. "It's to make people more aware, to make people get off their duffs and get involved,' said Mr. Briley, an undecided TAKE YOUR PICK: Port Perry artist and activist Tyler Briley poses with the tS recyclable. | voter who's monitoring the election here ) As is always a case with Mr. Briley, for the Toronto Star. sculpture that adorns his lawn.
