THE PORT PERRY STAR TUESDAY, MAY 9, 1995-3 look at us now OFFICIAL COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL EXPANSION SECTION Community Memorial Hospital. Carlog comm iy digs deep to help finance new facility By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star HEN the people at Community Memorial Hospital began planning in 1988 for the expansion to the facility, they faced a daunting task: Raising almost $3 million, one-third of it locally. As time went on, that figure climbed to $6 million, and successive governments lowered the commitment that was to be covered by funds from the public purse. Government funding was capped at $2.4 million, leaving hospital administration to raise a whopping $3.6 million locally. They needn't have worried. Response from the community for the 'expensive project has been nothing short of astonishing, according to Debbie McGarry of Co nmunity Memorial's Hospital Foundation. ivi onor pe e oihined with local Deen in receipt of 8 from ers of Scugog. And in-house | 1 Kent Farndale - Chair of the Board HE Official Opening of the Stephen B. Roman Wing, May 12, 1995, is a very import- ant and special time in the life of Community Memorial Hospital. It was two years ago that the turning of the sod took place and construction began on the 25,000 square foot wing, and on the 13,000 square feet of reno- | vation to the original hospital, which | was built in 1969. : These two years have been difficult for the staff, doctors, patients and visitors, and we thank them for their | patience and understanding during the construction and renovation. It was no mean feat, but we have come through with flying colors! The architects, Dunlop Farrow Incorporated, and the contractors, Dineen Construction Limited, as well as the subcontractors and our own staff, are to be congratulated on a job well done. As you tour the facility, it will be evident why we are so pleased. David Brown, Chief Executive Officer, has guided us through this time of upheaval with much skill and patience, during many frustrating times. Words will never be able to express our gratitude to him and KENT FARNDALE members of his staff for their conscientiousness and untiring devotion to this project. Ted Griffen, Chair of the Building Committee, and the other members of the committee also deserve our applause. They have dealt with so many details and decisions, and have made wise choices at every turn. This community is very special. The support and overwhelming con- tributions have made this six mil- lion dollar dream céme true. We are most grateful to the family of Stephen B. Roman, who saw fit to make this a lasting tribute to a gen- tleman with deep roots in this area. We now have a state-of-the-art facil- ity, and we thank you from the bot- tom of our hearts. Community Memorial Hospital looks forward ta providing the best health care possible for many years to come. Please join us in this wonderful celebration as we officially open the Stephen B. Roman Wing of Community Memorial Hospital. Kent Farndale - Chair of the Board HE changes we have seen over the past 20 years have been significant, both in facility re-configuration and delivery of services. In the early 70s, we were bursting at the seams, and the hospital had only been open for five years. As a result, we found it necessary to carry out internal renovations to relieve pressure on the Laboratory, Physiotherapy, Health Records, general storage and meeting room space. All of these renovations were temporary; however, they did give David Brown - Hospital Administrator being re-located, and an area was renovated for a | new doctor's lounge. Enlarged Day Surgery facilities will occupy the old : x-ray area. The Business Office has been moved into the old Emergency Department, while Administration will occupy the space once used for Physiotherapy. The Main Lobby has been completely renovated, including a new Auxiliary Gift Shop. The kitchen and cafeteria have been considerably enlarged and completely renovated. us some breathing space while we planned for a new wing on the north side of the hospital. This new wing was dedicated in 1984 as the Matthew B. Dymond Wing, and again, it was made possible through the efforts of tremendous community support. This new wing gave us space needed in the Emergency, Recovery Room, Physiotherapy, and basement storage area. As well, in 1985, we also added the heliport. A few short years later, in 1987, expansion plans were underway once more. Through the 80s, a | The Foundation office and Education Resource €entre will be movéd to the former Laboratory, Pharmacy, Nursing Administration areas. On the northeast corner of the hospital is a new Materials Management and Maintenance area. On the southeast corner, an additional boiler and stand- by generator have been installed, as well as a complete new power supply for the hospital. The Medical/Surgical/Long Term Care area was air-conditioned. Fundraising for this ambitious significant shift in the delivery of health services was evolving, from in-patient to out-patient ambulatory care, and our out-patient services grew significantly. After almost eight years of planning, reviewing, revisiting our work, three changes in provincial governments, and many frustrations, construction was started on our new 25 ,00Q, square foot Emergency/Ambulatory Care Wing, to be dedicated in memory of Stephen B. Roman. As well, 13,000 square feet of the existing hospital was also renovated. This major expansion recognizes the shift from in-patient to out-patient services, and there will in fact be minor reductions in in-patient beds. This project touches almost every corner of the hospital. The new wing will provide significantly enlarged facilities for the Emergency Department and Physio/Rehabilitation. The Laboratory/Radiology moved to the new wing, along with the Admitting and Health Record Departments. The pharmacy is DAVID A. BROWN project started in 1988, with a target of $2 million. We, in fact, raised $2.69 million for this project. The community has responded with great generosity to this project, not only financially, but by volunteering their services in many different ways. With the completion of these new facilities, we will have one of the finest small community hospitals that you will find anywhere in this province. Its design and functionality will lead us into the next millennium with current, state of the art equipment and facilities. On behalf of the hospital staff, I want to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to this community for their strong support in the development of your community hospital. Sincerely, David A. Brown Chief Executive Officer -- > i TT TE can um ow a aa ag RT i TE Tr oe
