So TIER Ay TT een ee Uren \ "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 1995-5 ( Election enumerators set to hit the bricks here By David Stell' Y Port Perry Star Don't look now, but there will soon be election officials out there hunting for you and your to vote in the next provin- cial election. With a date now set, local election officials will be racing against the clock this month in preparation for v. ters to go to the polls June 8. Enumerators will be travel- ling door-to-door beginning Thursday (May 11) for four days, to sign up all eligible vot- ers. You are eligible to vote if you are over 18 years of age June 8, a Canadian citizen on election day and a resident of Ontario for six months prior to the June 8 election date. Port Perry is part of the Durham East riding, which stretches from Clarington and North Oshawa all the way to Scugog's northern boundary. It covers a lot of the map around Port Perry, and one person will have the job af coordinating that area to be ready for an election. ° Francine Newton has served as the District Returning Officer for Durham East in three previous provincial elec- tions. Right now her task will be to get 360 enumerators, who have been appointed by the NDP and Progressive Conservative parties, ready for their job. She will train them today and tomorrow for the tough task of tracking down and listing the thousands of people eligible to vote in this riding. 53,000 voters in riding In the last provincial election the 53,000 people enu- merated in Durham East. Mrs. Newton says it will take two enumerators for each of the 170 plus polling stations they will have taking votes in this riding. It might sound like an intim- idating task, but with her expe- rience and support workers, Mrs. Newton is confident the process will run smoothly. "I'm comfortable with it," she says. "It can be stressful if you let it get to you, but I have an excellent staff." Advanced polls for Durham East will be held Thursday June 1, Saturday June 3 and Monday June 5 in several loca- tions. They include: 0 Trinity United Church in Bowmanville, a Brooklin United Church, and a In Manvers Township, although a loeation has yet to be named. Another option open to vot- ers will be Manchester Community Center from May 27 to June 6. Those who have not been enumerated at home will be able to register and vote at the community center on those dates. Mrs. Newton says she has two full-time staff members on hand to help her work right up to 11 p.m. some nights, but she expects things to slow down. "Once the enumeration is over we'll be at a more reason- able pace," she says. Now they just have to hope things run run according to plan. "Just about every « election there's little mix-ups," the dis- trict return officer said. "But if we get experienced enumera- tors things should run smooth- ly." Ee le LS. lh Dictated by province : ~ Rural blue box program expanding By David Stell Port Perry Star The blue box recycling program is expanding to reach rural areas of Durham Region. More residents in the municipalities of Scugog, Uxbridge and Clarington now have the opportunity to recycle up to 15 percent of household waste. Pineridge Each municipality will be delivering blue boxes and collection schedules to residents involved in the program. Glen Pleasance of Durham Region's works department said the expansion was dictated by province, which has made it a requirement for municipalities to col- lect recyclables from any home that currently receives garbage collec- tion. "We've had only posi- says. "It's much more con- venient for them to have their recyclables collected curbside than to take them to a transfer sta- tion." The blue box program accepts the following materials and will require these procedures. a Newspapers - bagged or loose in the bottom of blue box. a Glass bottles and jars - rinsed and placed loose in box without tops. a Plastic pop bottles - rinsed and placed loose without tops. 0 Metal beverage and food cans - rinsed and placed loose in blue box. 0 Corrugated card- board - bundled no bigger than blue box. 0 Telephone books - placed loose in blue box.
