A combination of good pitching, defensive play and smart base running kept this game close. Midget Merchants win 11-8 This week, the Port Perry Midget Merchants are sponsored by Scugog Property Maintenance, Valu Mart, Capital Car and Truck Rentals and the Waterfront Coffee Shop. The opening weeks of the Midget schedule were not very good to the club, however, last Thursday things pulled together. Newmarket was the oppo- sition, and in the early in- nings jumped into a 4 to 0 lead. In the third inning, Port started to put things together, scoring two runs and shutting down the op- position. In the fourth inning, Port's offence went to work and scored five runs as the club batted through the order and showed spir- ited base running. Port scored four more runs, to goon toan 11-8 victory. Matt Kay pitched the entire game and was two for four at the plate, scor- ing one run. Glen Espie and Paul Linton led the of- fence with four hits each. Carl Phoenix, Jeff Clark, Jason Logan and Bran Morton each contributed with three hits a piece, re- sulting in four Port Perry wins. The schedule for the Midgets next week is: June 12, Oshawa visits the Water St. diamonds; June 14 on the road to Stouffville and Monday, June 19 on the road again to Newmarket.
