"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 13, 1995 -3 ripped through their area Scugog cleaning up after tornado hits By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Several Scugog families are still cleaning up after a tornado touched down in the township last week, causing several thou- sands of dollars in dam- age. Emergency hydro, tele- phone and township roads department crews spent most of Wednesday night and Thursday cleaning up fallen trees and wires and repairing washed out roadways caused by the heavy rain storm and acompanying high winds. The northern and west- ern ends of the township were the hardest hit when the tornado touched down destroying everything in its path, including fences, large trees and roofs of homes. The relatively weak tor- nado, termed a F1 Torna- do by Environment Cana- da --- tornados are classified from FO-F5 in terms of severity -- caused extensive damage in the Uxbridge and d Scugos are- Ct was a timid tornado in terms of tornados but enough to do damage," said Bryan Smith of the Climate Control Office of Environment Canada. Characteristically tor- nadoes of the F'1 class car- ry winds of approximately 120 km/hr, he said. Ten 120-foot maple trees now litter the prop- erty of Craig and Liz Yab- sley of Marsh Hill Road, just north of Epsom. One tree clipped their house sending the top of their chimney through the roof. Three others landed on their deck. Other trees stretched the length of their property coming to rest on a neighbor's car, truck and motorcycle. Lightning first struck the ground at the farm across the road from the Yabsley's making several of the animals nervous. Mrs. Yabsley said she was trying to lure her own horses into their barn when a downpur began. The worst of the storm } Craig and Liz Yabsley were fortunate only one of 10 trees that were torn from the ground by last week's tornado hit their home. Robert J. Linda Darby, who lives at the northern end of the township on Brock Line 1 lost the roof off a recent 20° by 30' addition to their home. She said the storm hit hardest around 4:30 p.m. when the roof ripped and water began pouring into their home. Although the family tarped the roof in the middle of the storm, the house sustained ex- tensive damage as the wa- ter rose to more than one foot in the basement. The Darbys were also without power for a period of time and had no tele- phone for close to 24 hours as several hydro poles were snapped by the wind. - Residents on Durham Road 13, just east of High- way 12 were also hit with heavy rain, marble-sized hail and wind that flat- tened rail fences, tore shingles from roofs and knocked trees from the ground, according to resi- dent Roy Bebee. The remainder of the although hit with minor wind and flooding damage escaped the worst of the storm. Scugog Township Roads crews were on the scene as soon as soon as the stormended and spent the day Thursday repair- ing roads and washed out driveways. "There were quite a few washouts, especially in the Ward 1 area," said Ronn McDonald, roads su- perintendent for Scugog Township. Several of the washouts were in the Seagrave area as water rose in the ditch- es and culverts and seeped into nearby homes. Local hydro crews expe- rienced "quite minimal" problems, according to KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Last week's tornado and heavy rain caused thousands of dollars of dam-: age to this home on Marsh Hill Road, north of Epsom. Ten 120-foot trees came crashing down on Liz and Craig Yabsley' S property. Ee Terry Adderley, of Scugog Hydro. The wind caused a pow- er outage in the south end of the township in the Ar- row Street, Sexton Street and Union Avenue area which saw residents with- out power for just more than one hour. Ontario Hydro's Bow- manville office also only had one call to the Port Perry area for minor prob- lems. The Newmarket branch of Ontario Hydro, howev- er, which services the eastern area of the town- ship, had crews out all night repairing damage which caused the power outages in the Epsom area. Extensive damage in the Orangeville area also kept the Newmarket crews busy. Durham Regional Po- lice reported no major problems due to the storm. The most serious, accord- ing to Sgt. George Scott, was a downed tree on Sim- coe Street from which traf- fichad to be diverted.
