Sr , "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 13,1995 -5 By Kelly Lown Tory sweep shocks Grit hopeful Port Perry Star Mary Novak could read the polls justlike everyone else, but she didn't think Durham East residents would swing so far to elect a Tory government. The Liberal candidate was disappointed at her loss in last week's election, but it did not come unex- pectedly. "The polls indicated what was going to happen. We knew in the last two weeks it had turned but I - didn't think it had swung that far," she said from her election headquarters in Courtice. The mood was dismal at the small headquarters as a handful of supporters and campaign members tallied the results. The team knew they were out of the running almost as soon as the polls began comingin. "I'm surprised people voted this way as much as they did. They have had four years of extreme left. I am surprised they want four years of extreme right," she added. Mrs. Novak attributes the PC victory to the fact that the voters were angry at the government, and voted that way. She believes he ap- pealed to the voters with the workfare issue and "the 30 per cent tax lure," and said people are in for a shock if they are expecting all the changes promised. "I don't think they can offer those kinds of prom- _ises without affecting eve- ry other service we have," she said.
