Hall to Phi J.L Bulani, son of when a menacing storm -~ Police report Man burned as barbecue explodes A Port Perry man sustained first-degree flash burns after his propane barbecue blew up Sunday evening, Durham Regional Police said. Police said the man had returned to his Carnegie Ave. home around 5 p.m. after having the barbecue's propane tank filled at a nearby gas station and hooked it up before trying to light it with the starter. Ignition of leaking propane set off a fire ball that caused flash burns to the man's face, police said. The fire was intense enough to damage siding, and set the garage of the home on fire. The fire was extinguished and the man was treated for his burns at Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. Church ransacked Another church in the area has been vandalized, police said. According to police someone entered Prince Albert United Church on Jeffrey St. by way of a basement window sometime overnight July 13 and once inside went on a spree, ransacking the chapel. Pages were also torn from bibles during the inci- dent, police said. The occurrence follows a similar act at Immaculate Conception church on Scugog St. in Port Perry last Tuesday night (July 11), during which $3,000 damage was caused. Theft interrupted A Durham Regional Police officer on patrol in Port Perry last week interrupted what appears to be a theft in progress. Police anid tho officer was heading up Queen St. in a marked cruiser around 4:15 a.m. last Thursday (July 13) when he spotted two young males further up the street, struggling to carry a large object. As the officer approached the youths caught sight of the cruiser and dropped the object before running off. The officer stopped to investigate and found the two had dropped a 29-inch Sharp television set. ~ Stuck truck robbed There were no Good Samaritans in the vicinity when a man lost control of his truck and wound up in the ditch last week. Police said a man was travelling along Old Simcoe Rd. nerth of Port Perry around 9 p.m. last Monday (July 10) when the steering box of his truck gave out. The truck wound up in the ditch. The driver was unhurt, and left the scene on foot to call for help. By the time he returned, thieves had lifted a Pioneer stereo worth an estimated $500, police said. Apartment targeted Thieves kicked in an apartment door and made off with a telephone and answering machine last week, police said. The Simcoe St. building was entered after an outer door was pried, and the apartment door was bashed in during the break-in last Monday (July 10), police said. The theft occurred sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Police estimate the value of the stolen property at $200. Police are also investigating a break-in at a cot- tage in Caesarea that occurred sometime in the last several weeks. Thieves scaled a television antenna stand to go through a second-floor window and made off with a water pump, a radio, and some Hudson's Bay blan- kets, police said.
