BABY HAS ARRIVED! BOAT MUST GO! | iy Bantams win 16-4 The Port Perry Merchant Bantam Fastball team played host to Vaughan on Wednesday, July 19 and extended their winning streak with a convincing 16-4 win. This writeup is brought to you by XL Gas Bar. Vaughan got out of the blocks first as their leadoff batter led off with a double then scored on a fielding error giving them an early 1-0 lead. The Merchants came right back however as they counted two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1lead. The see-saw battle was on from here as Vaughan retook the lead in the top of the sec- ond inning scoring two runs to make it a 3-2 score. The Merchants Scott Jeffery took matters into his own hands here as he tied the game at three a piece as with one mighty swing of the bat, the ball sailed high over the left centre field fence and Scott trotted around the bases with a very large smile on his face. With the score notched at three a piece the Merchants defence came to life and they started to shut down the Vaughan batters only allowing one more run for the rest of the game. Meanwhile Scott's blast must of aroused the Mer- chant offence as they started to dominate the Vau- ghan pitching. Jason Best started the onslaught off with an in-the-park homer as the Merchants picked up one run in the bottom of the third and fourth in- nings and then six runs in the bottom of the fifth and five runs in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring. The Merchants hitting was led by Jason Best who was swinging a new bat and it helped as he went four for four at the plate hitting for the cycle. Also hitting for the Merchants were: Scott Jeffery who had a sin- gle to go along with his towering home run, Derek Tindall with a single, double and a walk, Ryan Wil- liamson with a single and a double, Owen St. John and Doug Short with a single and a walk each, Ryan Hawkins, Ryan Moynes and Marshal McQuaid with a single each while Jon Froats picked up a walk. Clay Brown started off on the mound for the Mer- chants and even though he picked up the win he faul- tered in the third inning and Jon Froats came on in the fourth to finish off the game. The Merchants next home game will be on Wednes- day, July 26 with an 8:30 p.m. start as they take on a tough Oshawa team. Come on out and enjoy some top caliber ball and cheer your local boys on.
