"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 1, 1995 - 19 - PORTS The Peewee Modacks Boys fastball team defeated Campbellford 3-2 last Wednesday evening in Campbellford to take their OASA round two games straight. This game was a real nailbiter as it took two extra innings of play to get the win. Chris Jones pitched the entire game and his control couldn't have been bet- ter as he only issued two walks in nine complete innings. He gave up a double and three singles while striking out 10 batters. Mike Versage who is always steady on defense at third probably had one of his best games to date. He made three flyouts, one of which he jumped straight up to snag a ball that was des- tined for left field. He also caught a line | drive at his shoe laces for another out. Mike threw four runners out at first, two of them were on bunt attempts. Mike's other two outs were made at third base as he tagged runners trying to steal on a couple of pass balls. Ryan McQuade léd the boys at the plate as he picked up a double and two singles. Ryan McBride picked up a triple to left field and a single. Mike picked up two singles with Jeff Ashton and Mark Richardson notching a single ModJacks win first round of OASA playoff series each. Mike drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as Mark reached base on a single to centre field. Mark was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Darryl Dalton and then to third on a single by Ryan McQuade. Mark scored on an infield error as Mike hit a hard shot at the shortstop. Earlier in the week the boys travelled to Pickering for a league game. Ryan McBride pitched the entire game for the shutout. He allowed four hits, three base on balls and struck out seven bat- ters. The boys ran up_a total of 18 runs on 17 hits. Jeff led the way with two home- runs and a single. Mike and Ryan McBride picked up a round tripper and two singles each. Darryl Dalton picked up three singles and Chris Jones picked up two. Matt Sturgess and Reid McTag- gart rounded out the hitting with a sin- gle each. This game brings their league record to 15 wins and two losses. The next home game will be on Tues- day, Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the south dia- mond against Oshawa. Defeat King City Legion Squirts advance to second playoff round On July 25, Port Perry/ Scugog's Legion Squirt Fastball Rep team opened its divisional OASA playoff series against King City. Thanks to pitcher Tim Jones' "no-hitter", good catching by Matt Skerratt and an intense overall effort, the team cruised to an 11-0 win. Tim allowed just two walks and struck out 17 over the seven innings. Cory McQuade made a huge diving catch in cen- tre for the last out of the game to help preserve the no-hitter. Mike Wiseman led the offence with two hits and a walk while Mike LeFort doubled and Tim tripled. Jeff Kane, Matt Skerratt, Mike Koury, Geoff Grieve- son, Luke Pilkey and Cory all singled to help the cause. Matt Fraser played well in the field and David (Crockett) Akermanis was on the hook in having to stay on the bench with the coaches in case of injury. [Luke made no mistake on a liner to left field. On July 27, the "Blue and Gold" swept King City on their diamond by an 8-2 margin and thus earr~ the right to advance to their Provincial OASA Championship tourna- ment in August. This game was a little ugly at times as the Legion weren't as focused and al- lowed mental and physical errors to creep in. King City had their share of er- rors too and the result was a score of 2-2 after one in- ning. It wasn't until the fifth inning that our squad broke out on the score- sheet. This time Mike Koury (who has raised the level of his game lately) led the attack with a single and double. Matt Skerratt also had a two-run double. Luke had a nice sacrifice squeeze bunt. David walked and scored in the fifth. Singles were hit by Adam Lamb, Jeff Kane and Tim. Tim pitched a three- hitter for the win with two walks and 15 strikeouts. Full credit goes to King City for a tougher game in this second one as they ran the bases well and kept it a little closer than desira- ble for most of the game. The team plays its next York-Durham league game on Aug. 3 against Woodbridge and will now start playing and practis- ing seriously with a view to preparing for a shot at a Provincial Championship on Aug. 19. Play five games in six days Gamblers get mixed results in game action The Greenbank Gam- blers had a busy schedule as they played five games in six days the past week with mixed results. Due to work commit- ments and vacations, the club played with a mini- mum personnel roster which contributed to some close losses and some close wins. The team travelled to Richmond Hill on Monday night and were shut out by a 4-0 score as Glen More- land tossed a three-hitter at the Gamblers while Richmond Hill collected seven hits off Byron Bara- nieski. The only Green- bank batters to hit safely were Colin Newell, Don Beaton and Todd Smart. Thursday night in Greenbank saw Mark Go- reski and Oshawa Mickey Finns' John Logeman put on a pitching clinic with both hurlers allowing only two hits each. Goreski scattered his hits while Greenbank rode hits by Steve Durham and Trevor Till plus an Oshawa error (the only er- ror in the game) to a tight 1-0 Greenbank win which pushed the Gambler City League record to 12 wins and five defeats. To stay well up in the race for top spot, the club needs a string of victories in their remaining seven games. (Six scheduled games plus arainout with the Oshawa Heat.) In Napanee on the weekend at the OASA Elimination Tournament, Greenbank got off on the right foot as they defeated Glencoe 4-2 behind the steady pitching of Mark Turnto Page 22
