18- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 9, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS Port Juniors have a week to remember This week's Port Junior Merchants sports report is sponsored by Precision Construction, Coldwell Bankers - Brett Puckrin, Ives Antiques and Van and Truck World. This past week was an interesting one which will be remembered by all players for a few years to come. On Monday night, the Port Junior Merchants visited Richmond Hill men's team for the first time this year and quickly fell behind 1-0 in the sec- ond inning. The game be- came a pitcher's duel with the infamous Richmond Hill pitcher striking out 14 players in a row going into the seventh inning. At the top of the last inning, the Port Juniors were deter- mined not to let all the strike-outs affect them and each batter ap- proached the plate with the intention of making contact. Their determina- tion paid off as they put five runs across the plate, with singles by Rich Burk- holder, Empringham, Laird, a double by Moase, a triple by Card, and a long sacrifice fly by Vand- er Slagt. The exciting comeback in this 5-1 game was a real boost for the team, coaches and fans. Card pitched seven in- nings, striking out nine, walking only one, allowing six hits and one earned run. On Tuesday, Port visit- ed the excellent Aurora Complex and faced an old friend and team-mate - pitcher Denis Smith. Once the game started, it was all business and Port pro- ceeded to put seven runs together. Card pitched seven innings with 12 strikeouts, two walks, three hits, and no earned runs for the 7 - 0 win. Thursday's return match with Aurora had to be cancelled due to the amount of water still on the diamond at game time. On the weekend, the Port Juniors were entered in the Meaford Tourna- ment, along with a few other teams from the Oshawa and City District Men's League: Port An- trim, Scarborough Royals, Bradford and Richmond Hill. The format was a double knockout, and the Port Juniors quickly won the first two games. This meant that they had to be defeated twice in order to be denied a spot in the fi- nals against the five other division winners. In the first game, Port met a team from Waterloo who started quickly with a two run home run in the first inning. Each team bore down and the score remained 2-0 into the top of the seventh. With rally caps on, Card started the inning with a walk and scored on an RBI Co- chrane single. Empring- ham, on with a fielder's choice was scored by a Smart single to tie the game. The crucial hit was an RBI double by MacLen- nan which scored Smart who, on an overthrow, stole home to take an im- portant two run lead. De- nis Smith, who relieved coming into the sixth was able to retire the side with his change-ups, and got credit for the win. In the second game, Port Juniors met a strong team from TARA (Owen Sound). Led by Smart's de- sire to beat one of his re- cent school mates, Port Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. GLC. | pI @ VP. A home run by Vander Slagt in the sec- ond gave Card the lead he needed, pitching seven in- nings, striking out six, walking one, and allowing six hits and no earned runs for the 2-0 win. TARA went on to beat Waterloo and were slated to play the Port Juniors who now had to be defeat- ed twice to be kept out of the playoff round. Unfortunately, TARA put together 6-1 and 5-1 back to back wins to elimi- nate the Port Junior Mer- chants from the Tourna- ment. The first loss was not pretty, but the second loss was a good effort by a TARA team with strong hitting and pitching. Port put 15 hits together in two games, but were not time- ly enough to score the runs when needed. The Juniors stayed at the Tyrolean Village in the Blue Mountains, and with 28 people in one chalet, the weekend turned out to be a great time of ball and socializing. For many years to come, we will all remember the entertain- ing Blues Brothers team of Murray and Roger, and the light-footed country western dancing of Jeff Card. Many unusual and hidden talents were brought out by a little prompting from fellow "chalet-ers". Hitters for the week: Ryan Burkholder - five singles, two RBI; Rich Burkholder - walk, four singles, double, RBI; Card - walk, two singles, triple, two RBI; Cochrane - seven singles, three RBI; Em- pringham - three singles, three RBI; Laird - single, RBI; MacLennan - two doubles, two RBI; McBride - two walks, two singles, two doubles, RBI; Moase - walk, single, dou- ble, triple, RBI, Smart - single, RBI; Vander Slagt - walk, two singles, double, home run, three RBI. Games for the coming week: Thursday, Aug. 10 - Port Juniors at Scarbo- rough Royals 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15 - Brad- fora vs. Port Juniors 8:30 p.m. The non-profit Milly Maid company of Ken and Don was much appreciat- ed as early each morning, the chalet was cleaned up and made presentable for another day. All in all, it was a great week of ball for the Port Jumors.
