About one quarter of one per cent to about half a per cent on savings, often less than the month- ly service charges on deposits. In the depres- sion of the 1930s they paid J per cent. A dormant account can cost $12 a year. They take every advantage of the individual depositor with exorbitant service charg- es, yet loan billions to wheeler dealer specula- tors like the Reichmans - who bankrolled the failed Canary Wharf deal in England. We all pay for this folly with increased service charges and low interest rates paid on savings. While they limit their loans to small businesses, they increase loans to for- eign operations by inter- national companies. The result is loss of jobs here in Canada. We might remind the banks that about 80 per cent of all new jobs are created by small businesses, not the big corporations they are so free in lending money to. Most corporate takeo- vers by foreign companies are financed with money supplied by the banks. Often International com- panies don't put up one cent for the takeovers - they are completely financed by our Canadian banks.
