A ceremony is set for 2 p.m. Sept. 17 in Port's Palmer Park to mark the release of a stamp com- memorating Daniel David Palmer, and anniversar- ies including his birth 160 years ago in Port Perry, and the founding a centu- ry ago of the establish- ment of chiropractic. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the found- ing of the Canadian Me- morial Chiropractic Col- lege. Scugog Township's eco- nomic development com- mittee has worked in con- junction with the Canadian, Ontario and Durham chiropractic asso- ciations, Canada Post, and Durham MP Alex Shep- herd in preparation for the event. Mr. Shepherd, who pushed for the stamp to commemorate Port Perry's famous son, said a victory was won when Canada Post agreed to is- sue the stamps, which will recognize D.D. Palmer and the town. "As a member of the community and its federal member of parliament, it 18 a highlight of my elected office to have played a role in getting a commemora- tive stamp booklet is- sued," said Mr. Shepherd. "The first day cover with the postmark of Port Perry will be seen and collected by enthusiasts worldwide, giving the community rec- ognition around the globe. As a stamp collector and community member, I'm proud of that." When first approached with the idea of a D.D. Palmer stamp last year, Canada Post balked. But consistent lobbying by the community, the MP and chiropractors convinced the crown corporation oth- erwise. Festivities on Sept. 17 will include a historical tribute to chiropractic of- fered by Dr. Herbert Lee. There will be a group of chiropractors from New York State led by Dr. Jim Bradman in attendance; the group intends to present a stone in Dr. Palmer's memory to town- ship Mayor Howard Hall.
