"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 11, 1995 - 21 SrorTs Midgets start season on a winning note The Canadian Tire Mid- get "B" hockey team start- ed out their new season with the first game against Woodville and came out on the winning side of a six to four match. The team was still in the midst of some cuts so we were carrying 18 boys for this game. Matt Phillips opened up the scoring with a one-timer after picking up a rebound shot from defenseman Brad Eadie. Scott Heffern Joined up with Ashley Vanschelven and Jeremy Todd to put Port ahead 2- 0. Woodville scored two quick goals to tie the game at two apiece. Before the first period was over Ryan Puckrin stood his ground in front of the Woodville net and found the top cor- ner after picking a great corner pass from linemate Scott Heffern. The second period saw lots of end to end hockey by both clubs, but only Woodville was able to capi- talize on their playing and pushed the score to 4-3 in their favor. The Islanders came out strong in the third period and Ashley was able to get the tying goal for Port on a good end to end rush. As- sisting on the goal was Trevor Smith and Ryan Puckrin. Mike Morden got his first goal of the year with a nifty backhand shot with assists coming from Matt Blowe and Dave Ka- minga. Woodville tried pulling their goalie to tie up the game, but Port's Scott Heffern got the clincher after picking up the puck from Aaron Levy who made the initial breakout through Wood- ville's defense line but couldn't get his shot on net. This years team looks like they are going to work well together and put a smile on the faces of coach- ing staff Steve Thompson, Gary Smith, Eric Donnel- ly and Ed Hobbs. The line of Ryan Puckrin, Ashley Vanschelven and Scott Heffern played a strong game tonight and showed their new coaches just what to expect from them. The goaltending is being shared by Brian Bickmore and Doug Short and both these fellows put out a great effort tonight. Once the complete team has been chosen we'll make sure we mention their names in future write-up. The Pearce Auction crew tried hard to get back into it, but the visitors depth held us off. The following day the Pearce Auction gang trav- elled to Trenton. After a scoreless first period, Port Perry short-handed, broke the deadlock. Keenan Geer received a pass from Shane Jeffrey to send him all alone for a nice deke and the score. Trenton came back with the powerplay and after substantial pressure scored the equalizer. Nelson Langmaid, Derek Goreski, Kory Bauer, and Danny Halward all played well defensively.
