Many people from Scugog, as well as from all across Canada, converged on Place du Canada to take part in the rally for unity. See story inside. 32 Pages Last Friday, students from both of Scugog's high schools were among the 150,000 in attendance at a huge rally in Montreal, aimed at showing Quebecers the will of average Canadians to keep their coun- try together. Today, we carry the impres- sions of one of those who made the journey. By Jake Robinson Special to the Star A journey born of pride in our country was the inspira- tion that called us from our homes early Friday morning. All other considerations were set aside in our country's hour of need. Local youths join in crusade for Canada A pilgrimage of the dedi- cated youth of our town ventured towards Montreal; towards an event that would alter the fate of our country. Although the trip was exhausting, our cause was just, and we knew that noth- ing would stand in the way of our conviction that a united Canada is what the future must hold. Bey -Fralick's Beach resident Mike McCourt was treated at Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry and later trans- ferred to Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto where he remained Monday with non-life threatening wounds. He told police that just before 9 p.m. Friday night he answered his door to find three people there, claiming to have run out of gas, said Staff Sgt. Sandy Ryrie. What occurred after that remains sketchy, he said. "He went out to help them and he was shot," said Sgt. Ryrie. "A few minutes later he'd been shot in the left hip."
