"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 12, 1995 - 13 Hospital to close 10 beds for holiday From Page 1 become an annual event at some hospitals as a cost- cutting measure, but it's never been undertaken in Port Perry before. "This is really the first time when we have decid- ed because of economic conditions to close beds," Mr. Brown said at a press conference Friday after- noon. "This is one way we're attempting to bal- ance that $52,000 (defi- cit)." Hospital administra- tion hopes to bring about the bed closures by send- ing home for the holidays some of the chronic care patients who reside at the hospital, awaiting place- ment in seniors' housing and nursing homes. Eight of the hospital's beds are designated chronic care, and between five and eight acute care beds are often occupied by seniors awaiting placement in other institutions. Community Memorial will be approaching rela- tives of those patients this week to ask if family mem- bers might care for them over the holidays; even taking patients home for the day would help, staff at the press conference said. "I think for a lot of pa- tients it won't be a huge impact," he said. "In fact, it should be quite enjoya- ble. It will make Christ- mas for them. "It's a nice hospital, but it's still a hospital." Mr. Brown said that de- spite the cost-saving measure, welfare of the elderly patients will be paramount. "We're not going to ap- proach people if we feel the patientcan't go," he said. He and other hospital officials are hoping the community will be under- standing as they try to find ways to operate and provide a high level of ser- vice during times of severe fiscal restraint. Hospital board chair Jerry Taylor said this and other closures are a sign of things to come. "The way we are going to deliver health care, not just in Port Perry but across Ontario, is chang- ing," he said. "There's go- ing to have to be drastic changes made to meet the reductions from the prov- ince. "We have some very se- rious concerns to deal with," he added. "We're go- ing to have to do it with as little pain as we can." Chocolate Ginger at: i = \ NUTSABOUT CHOCOLATE TS The Best Christmas shopping is right here at home... And as the deficit is ad- dressed, the hospital awaits word on possible funding reductions from Queen's Park, expected to be provided in detail by mid-January. "We have great concern for next year's fiscal bud- get," said Mr. Brown. The hospital's current budget is just over $6 million an- nually. "If we had a 5 per cent reduction, that's $300,000," he said. "And here we are, wres- tling with $52,000."
