22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 19, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SrorTs Pineridge Midgets have busy schedule Welcome to another up- date for the Pineridge Sports Centre Midgets. We've been busy and we apologize for the week de- lay. On Dec. 4, we faced off against East Oshawa. They didn't have a chance. We played a strong game, winning 3 to 2. Thomas the Tank Engine scored our first with a beauty deke to beat the Oshawa tender, low. What hands Tommy has. Jeff Clarke and Darryl McEnaney as- sisted. Kev Gray put a boomer, rocket, cannon, heat-seeking missile into the top corner, off the face- off. Bang! Clarke scored to put us on top, on the power play. McEnaney and Kev G-Ray assisted. Great game. Mike Phoenix stood on his head, as usual. Beauty. On Dec. 9, we travelled through poor weather and early hours, to Meaford, Ontario for a very big tour- ney. First we played Wil- lowdale of the MTHL. They were nothing. We smoked them four to one. Murphy scored a PP goal, assisted by Mic and G- Ray. Logan also showed 'em what he's got, assisted by T.C. and Clarke Gris- wold. Shanley bulged the twine at the Meaford invi- tational, after Gracie gave the puck to him, on the tape. Clarke also picked up an assist. Kev Gray, put a boomer, rocket, can- non, heat-seeking missile into the top corner, off the faceoff once again. Way to go G-Ray. Michael Phoe- nix was strong in the pipes once again. Our next opponents in the Meaford invitational was Keswick. We played hard, but didn't get the bounces we needed to win. We fell short two to one. Carl Phoenix shot it from the top of the circle, low and in the net, for our only goal. Assists to McEnaney and Clarkey. The spirit of Forrest Gump was with us, as he was handing out hats and signatures at the Owen Sound Community Broomball action The Brooklin Bruins kept their hold on first place overall in the league standings with a 3-0 shutout of the Homelife Swapers in local league play this past Sunday. The first period was scoreless and it wasn't until the midway point of the second before the Bruins got their first goal off the broom of Rob Mason from Nick Attwood. These same two players hooked up for the second Brooklin goal with just over a min- ute left to play. With 14 seconds showing on the clock Tom Attwood set up Perry Mason for the final mark- er. Jim Raaphorst recorded the shutout between the Brooklin pipes. The Framer's Gallery and Trader Sam's are both fighting it out for the final playoff position and this week it was Framer's prevailing as they came out on top of a close 2-1 battle. Trader's scored first early in the opening period with Les Allen scoring from Char- lie Dennis. Less than two minutes later this was an- swered by the Framer's with Kevin Smith marking an unassisted goal. The Framer's salted it away with Scott Blyth tallying the winner with 4:18 left to play in regulation time. Blackstock's Brewers kept pace with the top teams in the playoff hunt with a 3-0 blanking of the Stouff- ville Scorpions. As in the first game of the day there was also no scoring in the first period of this game as well. Al Bouwmeester got the eventual winner with Tom Wotten and Ron Short adding helpers, at the six minute mark of the final frame. On the ensuing face- off Blackstock marched down the ice with Wotten re- cording the goal with the assists going to John Sur- ette and Tim Cochrane. The final goal went to Short with Ron Wagg drawing the assist. Larry Reurekas earned the shutout for Blackstock. Due to the extended holiday season and the Rin- gette tournament on Jan. 6 - 7 there will be no Broom- ball until Sunday, Jan. 14, so on behalf of the league a happy holiday season to everyone. ho J Mackey, Bailey & Korb Barristers & Solicitors Saturday Mornings 9:00am to 12:00 noon 985-7391 Lake Scugog Lumber Building Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Mall. It just wasn't enough to get us the win. I guess sometimes...there just aren't enough rocks. Back to league action. On Dec. 11 we faced the toughest team in the league; Peterborough. We started off slow, but never gave up hope. After all, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know whatcha gonna get. We were down six to four going into the intermission. Carl Phoe- nix scored first, unassist- ed, with a nice wrist shot. Kev G-Ray put it in the five-hole, assisted by Clarke and McEnaney. Clarke and Phoenix rounded out the scoring for the first two periods. Assists to Mac, Logan, and Gray an assist on each. During Coach's Corner in the intermission, we threw water bottles, broke sticks, punched walls, called each other names before we could figure out what had to be done. A speech by captain Jeff Clarke and Coach Geer followed. We then proceed- ed to the playing surface and took the third period. We scored five third period goals, to Peterborough's one. It was Carl (TIC) to Logan (TAC) to Strickert (TOE). What a beautiful goal. It was so pretty, they decided to go out there and do it again. TIC TAC TOE. With the game all tied at six, Logan wanted to take advantage of a powerplay situation, and make the penalized Pete cry. Assist- ing Logan's valiant efforts were Clarke and McEna- ney. Clarke added to our lead with a wonderful wild wrap around goal, after picking up a pass from Mike Heasman. Kev G- Ray also assisted. Logan scored an empty netter to finish them off nine to sev- en. It's a good thing the guys from Peterborough are such good sports! (NOT!) Great comeback boys. Keep up the excel- lent effort and tremen- dous concentration. This week's player pro- file is on the last of the vet- erans, Kevin Hobbs. Hobbsy looks up to Leaf great Ken Baumgartner. Kevin's a nice kid with a big heart, and a great skating stride.
