Joey "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Automotive sales instruction starts next month D.C. seeks a few good § salespeople for course By Jeff. Mitchell Port Perry Star Just as there's more to buying a car than kicking tires and glancing under the hood, there's more to selling them than negotiating prices and signing on the dotted line. And starting next month, 25 students will be getting the inside line on a career in automotive sales, when Durham College's Uxbridge campus launches a nine-week course on the industry. Professional Automotive Sales Training starts Feb. 12, and will prepare students for the ever-changing world of auto sales with five weeks of classroom studies, and four weeks of co-op placement at dealership lots. The course is new to the college, and curriculum has been formed by instructor Robert (Bud) Morrison after extensive consultation with dealers in the area. He said at a press conference unveiling the new course Thursday that dealership owners are enthusiastic about the notion of having trained salespeople on the showroom floor. "Dealers are looking for people-orient- ed, drive people with the ability to research," said Mr. Morrison, a former school teacher and principal who has been in auto and real estate sales since retiring from the Durham Board several years ago. "They wanted people working for them who genuinely love people." "The decision was reached after thorough discussion... due to the current financial circum- stances of the club from last year's winter losses, and manpower restraints placed on its current mem- bership," said a brief state- ment sent out Monday morning. The club also noted that the early arrival of winter this year has made it diffi- cult to properly set up the shelter that's usually a part of the site. ~ The club's statement noted that the decision af- fects only this year's oper- ations of the ice palace: - "Maybe next year," the statement said. The Kinsmen will be holding their dog sled rac- es, planned to take place the weekend of Jan. 21. The races had to be called off after half a day's operation due to blowing snow on Lake Scugog last year, bringing about a loss of more than $10,000 for the club. He hopes through his course to give students insight on the fundamentals, and let them develop their own skills. Endorsing the program Thursday was Alex Williamson, owner of the Williamson's dealership in Uxbridge. He called the auto sales industry a highly competitive and rewarding field, at which the right type of person can excel. "A good salesperson feels he's self- employed," said Mr. Williamson, adding that many people who've tried their skills in other fields might find they're perfectly suited to the auto industry. "There's probably some terrific sales- people selling shirts at Eaton's this after- noon who haven't taken that extra step." Mr. Morrison said he's hoping to attract women to the course. Right now there are few women among the ranks on lots, and he sajd more female salespeople would better reflect today's car buyers. "The buying public is so different today," he said. "Forty per cent of the women are buying cars, and 70 per cent have a big influence on what's being bought." ' The course begins Feb. 12, d will be a full-time day class format. An infor- mation session on the course is planned for next Wednesday (Jan. 17) at the Uxbridge campus in the Testa Professional Building, 2 Campbell Dr., between 7 and 9 p.m. You can call 852-7848 for more infor- mation.
