2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 23, 1996 Knife-wielding thief stole his Grand Am 'Don't be a hero' man robbed of car advises ~ By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The last thing Mike Olaisen thought of when confronted by a knife- waving robber was being a hero. But the actions he took in trailing his assailant and notifying police of his whereabouts during a long car chase played a large role in an arrest be- ing made. Mr. Olaisen, 22, was the man whose car was stolen last Sunday night (Jan. 14) by a knife-wielding thief who took off from Oshawa, was involved in an accident in Manches- ter, and continued on until Durham Regional Police officers finally arrested him across the township border in Uxbridge. He faces numerous charges in connection with that inci- dent, including armed rob- bery, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and possession of a weapon. Mr. Olaisen was in his car in the parking lot at the Pizza Hut restaurant in Oshawa around 7:30 last Sunday night. He was preparing to back his when he noticed someone in his rear view mirror. He waited for the person to get out of the way. "The next thing I know my door flies open and he's screaming at me to get out of my car." Mr. Olaisen said it was when the man grabbed his arm he saw that he had a knife. The assailant again demanded he get out of the car, a 1987 Grand Am. "So I did," he said last week during an interview at his Prince Albert home. "I was going to give no op- * position when the guy's got a knife." As it turns out, police believe the suspect had made a similar attempt to steal a car just across the street from the parking lot Mr. Olaisen was in. That driver escaped. The man jumped into Mr. Olaisen's car - and drove off north on Simcoe St. Mr. Olaisen quickly dialed 911 on his cell phone and informed an op- erator of what had oc- curred. A delivery driver at the restaurant told him to get into his car, and the chase was on. Grand Am up Simcoe St., unnoticed for a time. When the man in Mr. Olai- sen's car became aware that he was being fol- lowed, he started taking evasive measures. He dodged west on Rag- lan Rd. and followed it over to Hwy. 12, where he turned north, driving through Myrtle and to- wards Port Perry. At Hwy. 12 he turned off the lights in an attempt to elude h hié pursuers. "The whole time I'm up- dating 911," Mr. Olaisen said. He kept police in- formed of the direction in which his car was travel- ling, and how fast the driv- er was going. "The next thing I know, we're in Manchester," said Mr. Olaisen. Police cruisers were waiting there, and at- tempted to get the man in the Grand Am to stop. Even after rear-ending a car at the intersection of 12 and Durham Rd. 21 the driver kept going, veering easton 21 toward Utica. Police pursued the car along 21, as did Mr. Olai- sen and his friend. In an interview, he recounts the terror of being held up at knifepoint, and watching his assailant drive away in his car. The man was arrested by Durham Regional Police after a chase that began in Oshawa, and ended in Uxbridge Township. up to continue the chase. They finally found the car west of Durham Rd. 23, abandoned. A short foot pursuit re- sulted in a suspect being nabbed as he hid under a tree in a residential yard. A knife believed to have been used in the robbery was found nearby. Mr. Olaisen says now that he complied with the man's demands for his car, but wasn't going to sit idly by while he drove off with it. "At first I was thinking, there's no way I'm going to let him get away with my car," he said. "He deserves to be caught, and I'm going todo all I can to help." That said, the son of a Durham Region police offi- cer knows he did the right thing when he was con- fronted. "You can say all you want, like, if somebody pulls a knife on me, I'll hit them in the arm, or what- ever. But your life is more important than a car, or a truck, or anythingelse. "Don't try and be a hero; let the police do their job." Mr. Olaisen now has his car back -- it sustained damage to the front end in the collision in Manches- ter, and is at an area gar- age right now -- and re- mains shaken by the incident. He said he will be careful from now on. "When I go out to the car I'm looking right, I'm look- ing left, everywhere around me," he said. "Ad soon as I'm in the car, the doors are locked."
