"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 23, 1996 -3 vackpot: § A Port Perry family § wins on scratch & win Bingo game Marnie Ranger's like a lot of people. She occasionally plays the various lotteries that are around, picking up a scratch and win ticket here and there as she's go- ing about her errands. Sé#when she scratched her way to a $25,000 jack- pot recently, she was more than surprised. ItwasJan. 10in the eve- ning when the windfall came her way. Marnie and husband Mike had tucked their three daughters, 'aged 11, 9 and 7 into bed, and were settling in to watch some television be- fore calling it a day them- selves. Marnie, 35, pulled out the $3 Instant Bingo card she had bought earli- er in the evening at the Mac's Milk store on Scu- gog St. in Port Perry. "I was scratching a few (boxes) and then stopping and listening," she said. But her attention became riveted to the card as she progressed, and saw that she was on her way to fill- ing in all the boxes that surrounded the outer edge of one of the bingo cards. Finally, she scratched away the remaining num- ber -- B5 -- and saw that she had qualified for the $25,000 prize. "I said, 'Mike, we have just won $25,000," she re- called last week. Of course, Mike didn't believe her. He checked the card, had Marnie re- check the card, and then they both phoned a milk store in town. The clerk there took the registration number from the ticket, and checked it out through the lottery machine in the Races off From Page 1 day because of blinding snow conditions on the lake. Mr. Goldberg said the club is just going to start making plans for next year and may consider alterna- tives, such as a change in the date of the competi- tion. The Kinsmen Club was running this year's event on a zero budget, after los- ing money the previous years. Although the cancella- tion will not increase the club's deficit, the club was hoping that revenue from the sled dog races would help to reduce what they lost in past years. store. Then I heard her say, "You have won a lot of mon- ey'," said Marnie. "That's when I went from doubt- ing it to having kind of a numb feeling." Marnie and Mike have since made the trip to To- ronto to pick up their check, and have plans to use their windfall wisely. They operate their own company, and have been looking for a bigger house for the past several months. And they have three kids, so the extra cash will certainly help out. It's a manageable sort of prize, said Marnie, who has previously won 50 bucks playing the Bingo game. It's not enough money to disrupt their lives, but it will certainly help to make a nest egg that can be depended on in the future. "Life still carries on," she said. "There's a little less stress, and maybe a little more believing that the impossible can hap- pen." IT'S A WINNER: Marnie Ranger of Port Perry never thought she'd win big on the lottery, so was surprised earlier this month when an Instant Bingo card like this one resulted in a $25,000 jackpot. She and husband Mike will invest their nest egg. Impaired driving is being blamed as the cause of an accident which claimed the life of a Blackstock woman Friday night near Raglan. Durham Regional Police said Lloyd Beech, 50, - and his 42-year-old wife Suzanne, of Blackstock, were northbound on the Oshawa Rd. in their 1989 GMC van when a southbound pick-up being driven by an Oshawa man crossed the centre line, hitting them head-on. Mrs. Beech died instantly, police said. Mr. Beech Impaired charge is laid after fatal crash was taken to Oshawa General Hospital with serious injuries, and has since been released. Firefighters had to use extrication to help the driver of the pick-up out of his twisted vehicle, police said. He sustained minor injuries. As a result of a police investigation a 35-year-old Oshawa man has been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, and driving with more than the legal amount of alcohol in his bloodstream.
